The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is giving them confidence that they can learn. This will give them confidence to try and be creative in finding ways to understand any complex topic they need to know. One of my strengths as a tutor is that I am creative in discussing complex topics. I can discuss the same topic in different…

Help them enjoy learning. The role of a tutor should be to engage the student and make the learning process fun, encouraging them to put more effort into their learning, consequently improving their results. As well as this, it is vital that a tutor guide the student to a solution rather than simply giving them the answer, allowing them to…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make them feel proud and confident with themselves as well as being a supportive teacher. I know from experience that when you're struggling with a concept it is a very disheartening thing and can lead to self doubt and giving up. I think a tutor should help a student work through…

Engineering Studies Tutor North Avoca, NSW
Ultimately, there are two things. Teaching a student to be curious, and teaching a student how to learn. Education systems are designed to filter all kids through a rigid, structured system, which, although brilliant for most, loses the spirit of why we learn. Because we are curious! We like to see how things work, to investigate our world and…

Inside Mount ElliotTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Rudy focused on long division using step-by-step word problems and practiced adding hours and minutes, including challenging questions involving time calculations.

Year 8 student Chloe worked through algebraic expressions—expanding, simplifying, and dividing fractions as well as revising formulae for speed, distance, and time in preparation for an upcoming test.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Rory tackled trigonometry with SOHCAHTOA to find side lengths and angles in right triangles and reviewed compound interest concepts from his recent school test.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student working on algebra and equations needed repeated reminders to show all steps, as he skipped showing steps in algebra, which hid sign errors.

In Year 11, a student preparing for HSC struggled to apply formulas during problem-solving when her notes were left at school—organization issues meant lost revision time.

A primary student found lining up numbers tricky in long division; messy columns led to calculation mistakes.

Meanwhile, a Year 9 learner often forgot calculators or started late due to technical hiccups, making it harder to practice efficiently. In these moments, valuable learning time slipped away unnoticed.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Mount Elliot recently noticed some real growth in students' learning habits. In Year 11, one student started asking for more challenging homework and even told the tutor when she needed help, instead of just staying quiet as she used to.

A Year 9 student who had struggled with algebraic fractions before managed to solve several on her own after working through a few examples together—she now double-checks her answers independently without prompting.

Meanwhile, a younger student in Year 4 created his own mnemonic to master long division and checked his answers by reversing the calculation himself.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Erina Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Holgate Public School.
