I think the most important thing a tutor can do is to get a proper understanding of the level of mathematical 'maturity' of a specific student, rather than just assuming a certain background knowledge. Once this is established, it's possible to get the core of what exactly a student is struggling with (usually a particular fundamental concept) and…

I think tutors need to make/ help students feel comfortable and less stressful with their studies in school. Talking to the students and identify their strengths and weaknesses, and hence support them to improve and reach their fullest potential. I always try to adapt my teaching to the students. I never want to be fixed with one way of teaching…

Make concepts easier to understand and grasp for students. To not let the students lose interest in the subject. Students to enjoy their study and stay involved. I connect well with students. I explain concepts in a simpler way that are easy to understand. I am jolly and friendly but not to the point where the student starts ignoring my words.…

He can be as patient as possible and try to teach him in several small steps and not preferring opting for those bigger ones which utlimately helps him to enjoy the subject which must be the uptimate goal of any tutor. I believe i own awesome communication skills and have the potential of understanding the loopholes in learning any concept. I try…

The most important thing in teaching any subject is showing the big picture along with the nitty-gritty. I hope that my student can see the beauty in the sometimes boring schoolwork, and see the deep underlying connection and unity of it all. However, sometimes desperate times happen, and then we must drop the profound thoughts and do what needs…

Give the student confidence. Confidence either to persist with the hard work till they hit a breakthrough or the confidence to thing around the problems. There are a lot of students who don't lack in talent and just a couple little things are holding them back. Solving those can really help them grow. I am able to seperate a topic into byte sized…

For me, the most important thing is helping students actually enjoy math and feel comfortable with the process of not knowing right away. A lot of math is about sitting with that discomfort, resisting the urge to panic, and trusting that if you think logically, you’ll find a way through—even if it’s not the “textbook†method. I want…

In my opinion, the most important thing a tutor can do for students is making sure that the student completely understands the concept and does not try to rote learn it. I believe that a tutor is a person who can change the point of view of a student through which they can grasp the concept well and improves their understanding ability. I own…

Some of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is engage them within a subject, keep them interested to learn more, and motivate students to do their absolute best. Tutors should also be able to explain their reasoning very well, and build better study habits I believe my biggest strength as a tutor is being able to explain…

Make sure that you're not doing the work for them, only assisting them in their learning- For it will be them sitting the exam come the end of the year. By teaching them not only the subject matter but also the skills to mold themselves to every problem or question, you'll be instilling confidence in them that no matter what is introduced to them…

In my opinion, it's most important to help students to understand basic concepts and theories when tutoring them. With these knowledge, students will have confidence to overcome problems and hardness in Maths by themselves. For the past two years, I have tutored several students in Physics and Maths, especially Math Methods year 11 and 12.…

The roll of a tutor is two-fold. Firstly, to help students understand the material they are working with. There are many ways to go about this, but one of the most important roles of a tutor is to be able to bring intuition to the abstract. This in addition to introducing effective methods for solving problems. The second key roll is helping…

While helping students grasp challenging concepts is crucial, equally vital is fostering a supportive and encouraging learning environment. The most vital thing a tutor can do is to make study fun , yes, a student who just remained worried about studies and exams should no longer be worried if he or she has a tutor . As a tutor, I believe it is critical for providing a space for students to not be afraid to be wrong and foster engagement. Inspire students to understand the importance and broader concepts within mathematics. Our modern world is built around education and every student can expect to experience a lot of it in the future. Therefore, it is most important that a tutor should model genuine interest in learning (both the subject matter and how to learn well), so that the student him/herself enjoys the process and is encouraged to become a lifelong learner.…

Heather Goode, Mount Osmond

Inside Mount OsmondTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Lucy worked on consolidating her understanding of index laws and practiced adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions.

In Year 10, Divyanshu tackled differentiating simple rational functions using first principles in Maths and focused on stoichiometry and unit conversions like %w/v and mol/L in Chemistry.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Zac reviewed tricky chain rule questions before learning the product rule in differentiation, then moved to Chemistry to deepen his grasp of chromatography concepts such as Rf values and retention time.

Recent Challenges

In Year 12 Chemistry, one student's written responses often lacked precise terminology and structure when explaining solubility or drawing organic molecules. As a tutor noted, "He struggles to view the entire problem and develop a 'game plan' before tackling a question," which led to confusion in multi-step tasks like titrations or back titration calculations.

In Year 8 Maths, another student hesitated to write out full working for negative numbers or complex fractions—sometimes only attempting parts they felt confident with—making it difficult to identify where misunderstandings occurred during revision sessions.

Recent Achievements

A Mount Osmond tutor noticed Zac, a Year 9 student who previously struggled to write at length, completed an entire essay on his own and soon after scored an A on his English assignment—he's now identifying weak points in his writing without prompting.

Meanwhile, Divyanshu in senior high school chemistry has moved from needing support with ionic equations to independently solving unfamiliar problems and accurately suggesting chemical reagents during practice.

In a younger session, Lucy started tackling fraction questions she once avoided and now applies index laws with minimal help, even asking for extra practice when unsure.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Burnside Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Seymour College.
