As a tutor, I believe it is my duty to make sure that students love to learn in general and not just for grades! It is very important to build their learning skills with creativity more than just learning the facts. I can communicate well with students and see eye to eye on difficult topic. A tutor should be extremely caring when it comes to their students. Often, especially kids, are afraid to ask tutors questions at the risk of "sounding dumb". I believe it is the tutor's foremost responsibility to assure the students that learning is for everyone, and they are not alone when facing that doubt. Perseverance, organisation, patience,…

Listen to what the student actually wants help with and find out the root cause of why they are stuck or confused. The teacher needs to work together with the student, not against them. I am training to become a teacher and so I have a good understanding of how learning can occur, especially for students. I have been able to help students in the…

I believe one of the most important things a tutor can do is build a student’s confidence and adapt lessons to their learning style. For example, I often use practical examples such as real-life applications of forces and motion (e.g. seat belts in car) in Physics to help students better understand difficult concepts rather than relying only on…

It would be empathy, in my opinion. I am aware that there are intelligent people who are easily able to surpass me in knowledge, but I believe that to effectively teach and learn, one must have a sufficient level of empathy. One need not always be a great teacher to be a great intellect. My capacity for empathy is unmatched. I can put myself in…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is build a student's confidence while helping them develop genuine understanding. A good tutor also creates a supportive and structured environment, sets clear expectations,…

I think that the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to help them completely understand the material. Not only so that they can do a specific question, the important thing is for them to understand the concept, so when they encountered different kind of question, they would know how to approach it. Furthermore, a tutor must adjust…

Each student learns in a unique way and at a different pace and thus a good tutor must understand this and personalise their learning. Alongside this, the tutor must focus on building the student's confidence and teaching to their strengths before wandering into waters unfamiliar to the student. Inside MurrumbeenaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Lily focused on simplifying fractions and practising multiplication facts up to 10, using visual aids for support.

Year 7 student Ava tackled linear equations and explored plotting points on the Cartesian plane, including drawing straight-line graphs by hand.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Ethan worked through trigonometry concepts such as bearings and distances, as well as calculating surface area and volume of composite shapes.

Recent Challenges

A Year 4 student left their homework incomplete and was "easily distracted," often rushing through fractions and worded problems without full confidence, as one tutor observed.

In a Year 8 algebra session, skipping steps when solving equations led to small errors—practicing showing all working became necessary for test preparation.

Meanwhile, a Year 11 student relied on back-checking answers but occasionally misapplied formulas before correcting themselves.

The struggle to commit times tables to memory persisted in Year 5; repeated revision was needed as material was quickly forgotten, leading to frequent revisiting of the same multiplication concepts week after week.

Recent Achievements

One Murrumbeena tutor noticed a big shift with a Year 10 student who previously hesitated to tackle statistics problems alone—she completed her entire homework set without needing prompts.

In Year 12, another student who used to second-guess herself with complex loan calculations is now confidently comparing interest rates and can choose the most cost-effective loan on her own.

Meanwhile, a younger student who struggled to show his maths working has started organising each step clearly in his book instead of skipping ahead, finishing all ten practice questions accurately for the first time.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Carnegie Library and Community Centre—or at your child's school (with permission), like Murrumbeena Primary School.
