I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to support them without judgement. Whether that support comes in smaller forms of teaching students concepts they may struggle with or encouraging students to not give up. As a tutor I think my greatest strengths are bringing in a passion and enjoyment for the subjects I tutor and…

The most important thing a tutor can do is help their students understand the concepts not just give them the answers. I feel like I am an easy person to talk to so that my students would feel comfortable asking questions or making…

I believe it is highly important to listen to your students. All students learn in different ways, if the method used to teach the student is not effective it is very important to switch strategies in order to ensure the student gets the most out of the lesson. I want all my students to enjoy our sessions and see it to be beneficial to their own…

I consider the most essential things a tutor can do for a student to include; teaching content in an engaging and interesting way, making lessons enjoyable and motivating the student to learn, providing clear explanations and being patient with the student when teaching while remaining dedicated to achieving learning objectives. Physics and maths…

Motivate and inspire students. Tutors should create a positive and supportive learning environment where students feel motivated to learn. They should also provide students with regular feedback and praise. My ability to explain complex concepts in a clear and concise way. I can break down complex topics into smaller, more manageable chunks that…

1. Help them towards their study milestones so they have an unhindered path towards any given career of choice. 3. Understand something rather than memorising it. I hold this statement in significance. Having studied in different countries I understand the difference in teaching. Tutoring being 1 on 1 or in small groups allows for this. I…

I think it's incredibly important to be patient. People learn at their own paces and for those who struggle more than others, patience can help foster an environment where they feel comfortable expressing a lack of understanding in a concept and allows them to make the most of each tutoring session. It is also important to create lesson plans that…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to act as a facilitator, to give them the tools to help them realise their full potential. Each child has the ability to thrive and succeed, to help them discover and be motivated by this is the most important thing a tutor can do for their student. One of my greatest strengths as a tutor is…

I think one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student if ensure they feel safe the ask questions, make mistakes and learn at their own pace. Tutoring isn't about loading a bunch of information on a student, it's about building confidence. A tutor should ensure they listen and adapt to the students learning style, making sure they…

Inside NarrabeenTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Sienna worked through times tables, addition and subtraction, plus tackled word problems to strengthen number sense.

In Year 9, Josh focused on graphing linear equations and solving systems of two equations.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Emily reviewed surds and practiced factorising and expanding quadratic expressions, using step-by-step examples for clarity.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student working on rationalisation in algebra often rushed, skipping steps and losing track of logical progression—"it is important his setting out is logical and able to be followed as he progresses," noted the tutor.

In Year 11, time management issues during past test reviews meant planning was inconsistent, with key questions left unfinished under pressure.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 student sometimes avoided drawing large diagrams or writing clearly in geometry, leading to confusion when revisiting their work.

A Year 3 learner struggled to recall times tables without written support, which slowed problem-solving during complex addition tasks.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Narrabeen recently saw a Year 10 student, who previously hesitated to check her own work, begin identifying her mistakes during topic tests and explaining how she'd approach those questions differently next time.

In a high school session, another student who often relied on prompts started attempting practice questions independently for an upcoming assessment without waiting for hints, showing new initiative.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner who struggled with times tables earlier now writes all of them out independently on paper and solves multi-step subtraction equations with far less support than before.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Dee Why Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Rose Catholic Primary School.
