I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to find out the student's learning method and try to adapt to that. Everyone learns differently and tutoring should be focused on helping the student in the best possible way that they can receive. I can easily adapt to new situations and environments which will help since every…

Not just giving them knowledge but also teaching them studying skills. I believe a success student is not one who knows content but one who knows how to study despite the difficulty that the work presents. As a tutor, the most Important skills I can teach my tutee is how to study efficiently and effectively. Not only so, cultivating a love for…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is break the subject down as much as possible and really ensure that they understand in their own way before moving on to the next thing. I am very patient and able to explain a concept in several different ways. I also am very knowledgeable and have my own study tools I can apply with…

I highly value positive, in-depth and fun relationships with students. I consider myself to be an extremely patient and perseverant person. I have the drive to try things again and again in…

As I mentioned before I think it is extremely important for tutors to give their students personalized tools to succeed in the future. The nature of 1-on-1 help should lead to finding ways to personally help students excel that large classes can't always provide. I think I bring a lot of personality to the table and can get along with the children…

The most important thing is to build a relationship where there is communication, if a student finds it hard to express what their feeling with regard to their difficulties then it's my job as a tutor to make them comfortable so they can express themselves, I can't help if I don't know what's wrong, but I should create an environment in which…

As a requirement to be able to teach college physics, I had to take a course in teaching etiquette where we were required to submit a teaching statement for our final grade. The philosophy I leaned on in that statement is one I still believe to this day, and that is that the best thing a tutor can instill in a student is a seed of curiosity and…

It is not to reveal the answer but to guide them through the process of discovering the answer. Give a man a fish he is fed for a day, but teach a man to fish and he is fed for a lifetime. I believe that student's can generally pick up on whether a tutor is invested in them quite quickly. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is actively show them that they do in fact want them, as an individual, to do better than they've ever done before and show interest in them as a person. I am very good at picking up on what…

To be able to build a personal relationship with the student where the student is comfortable to ask questions as to what they don't understand, and be able to answer them clearly and patiently. The most important things is to be there for them. Your presence as a tutor in the form of being patient, listening to them in not just the question they cannot solve, but also their learning methods and confidence. By being there for them, rapport can be developed such that it can help them to feel more comfortable failing, especially with a good…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is helping them to understand and master the basic foundations in their subjects. These are important as from these key concepts, students will build on them further so they can tackle even harder questions with confidence. A great tutor will also showcase to a student the bigger picture, and…

Build confidence and independence, not dependence. A good tutor doesn't just hand over answers they teach the student how to think through a problem, so that in the exam room, alone, the student can do it themselves. That means diagnosing the real gap (it's often two topics earlier than where the student thinks they're stuck), explaining it in…

First and foremost, I believe a tutor should inspire genuine passion and interest from a student with regards to the subject at hand- I strongly feel that students perform their best when they take interest and see the value in the concepts being taught. Furthermore, it's important that a tutor is able to adapt to the learning and working style of…

Inside NedlandsTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Sofia worked on identifying and using nouns, adverbs, verbs, and adjectives in English, alongside practicing multiplication tables for 4, 6, 7, 8, and 12.

In Year 8, Chloe focused on understanding isomorphic graphs and adjacency matrices in preparation for an upcoming test.

For Year 10, Daniel tackled Pythagoras' Theorem by finding hypotenuse lengths as well as working through problems requiring calculation of unknown side lengths given the hypotenuse.

Recent Challenges

In recent lessons, a Year 9 student did not complete assigned homework and sometimes brought only answers rather than full working, which made it hard to pinpoint where understanding was lost.

A tutor noted, "He relied on mental maths for division instead of writing steps," leading to repeated errors in basic calculations.

In Year 11 Maths Methods, messy written work during standard deviation questions meant time was wasted hunting for calculation slips instead of focusing on new concepts.

Another senior student skipped practicing harder problems and depended heavily on calculators before attempting questions by hand, especially under exam pressure.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Nedlands noticed that a Year 10 student who used to get stuck on worded trigonometry questions is now breaking down each part independently and double-checking his steps, which wasn't happening a few weeks ago.

Another recent high school session saw Chloe challenge herself by working through matrices unaided for the first time, showing she's comfortable relying on her own skills.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student who previously hesitated to ask for help with tricky multiplication now openly checks his thinking out loud and requests clarification whenever he's unsure.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Nedlands Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Nedlands Primary School.
