It is most important for a tutor to engage with the student, so that they will be more inclined to be attentive and take the lessons seriously. It is also neccesary to make the neccesary preperations required for the student, e.g background research for foreign topics/ or remodled questions, to suit the student's needs and allow for efficient…

This means identifying gaps in their knowledge, explaining concepts in a way that suits their learning style, and encouraging them to think independently rather than relying on answers. I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is show them the importance of intrinsic motivation. Whilst any tutor can simply give a student the answer, an excellent tutor will inspire a student to work through challenges and learn for the sake of learning. This intrinsic motivation will last beyond primary and high school, and is…

Tutoring is very different to a typical classroom setting. Each session is unique and solely focused on the one student. This one-to-one learning experience is something many students wouldn’t normally get in a classroom. Naturally, they’ll be able to ask as many questions as they want. As a result, I’ll feel I’m making a real difference…

A tutor can provide the pathway of learning. The tutor should understand the position of his/her students. Significantly, the tutor helps to form a strong foundation which helps students to achieve the goals. Basically, teaching is an art. I prefer doing teaching in a simple way. A tutor should, first and foremost, be amicable and trustworthy to students. This means that students should be able to confide in their tutors in the event that they are struggling to grasp matter, and, no matter how many times they ask, the tutor should provide the necessary assistance. Inside NewingtonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Amy focused on algebraic factorisation and worked through inverse relationships, using diagrams to reinforce concepts.

For Year 9, Marcus revised trigonometric differentiation alongside key techniques in mathematical induction, applying these to a range of practice questions.

Meanwhile, Year 5 student Grace tackled long division methods and explored number patterns by solving problems from her workbook and discussing strategies aloud.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student often avoided writing out algebra steps, especially in factorisation and inverse relationships, which led to persistent sign errors—"he tried solving monics mentally but lost track of negatives," as one tutor noted.

In Year 11 calculus sessions, anxiety about remembering derivative rules resulted in over-reliance on formula sheets rather than internalising key concepts.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student working on division would hesitate to set out the numbers clearly, causing confusion mid-question.

For one Year 7 learner, forgetting required formulas meant time was wasted searching for them instead of applying knowledge during practice.

Recent Achievements

One Newington tutor noticed a Year 11 student who used to hesitate with derivatives now confidently tackles even tricky motion and graphing problems on her own, after weeks of struggling to connect the steps.

In a recent high school session, another student who had always guessed at complex number questions finally started asking for help when stuck—an important shift from his earlier reluctance to admit confusion.

Meanwhile, a Year 3 student who would freeze up during multi-digit addition now works through sums independently, only needing reminders not to skip carrying numbers.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Auburn Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Newington Public School.
