The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is simply be open to answer any questions a student might have. They need to be able to grasp the entire concept so that it can be applied in their school work. My strengths as a tutor could be my patience and my willingness to go out of my way to help any student I can. I think I also have a…

Build their confidence as much as their knowledge. A lot of students who struggle aren't actually bad at the subject they've just convinced themselves they are. Fixing that mindset matters as much as getting the right answer. I'm good at breaking down complex problems step by step without overcomplicating it. I also don't make students feel stupid…

I think a good tutor can make studies feel like a piece of cake rather than rocket science. I think as a tutor it is my job to foster critical thinking and problem solving skills, so that a student can develop independent ideas and eventually become confident in the subject. My greatest strength is my ability to differentiate instruction to meet…

A tutor needs to be patient with the student, no matter the student's age/grade level. It is extremely important that the student feels comfortable with the tutor and is able to ask any question, be it big or small. When I tutor, I ensure to come up with a model and style of teaching that is moulded for the student and their style of learning. I…

A generalised approach to help students understand concepts is very ineffective as each individual is different. A tutor must have excellent interpersonal skills to understand how a particular student learns and works to provide them with…

Listen to the student. I firmly belive that students know where they lack and what's stopping them from achieving their goals. Ensure the student doesn't lose hope or motivation to study. It is imperative that students get enough time and space to practically apply what they learn in ways that pique their interests. As a tutor I strive to first…

Actually speaking, the tutor should focus on potential development rahter than merely improving the skills of a student. It could be best tutors can adopt practices such as NLP ( neuro linguistic programming) to boost rapid learning of a student. But for that only truly commited tutors would raise their hands. A tutor should establish a connection with their student in the sense they should make the effort to truly understand their student for their strengths and weaknesses. Similarly, a tutor should uphold patience with every student. That way, a student learning in a encouraging environment allows them to develop on their knowledge and skills more…

This encourages critical thinking amongst students and shows them that they are capable enough to learn these hard concepts that they may be dealing with. Ultimately, teaching…

I think as a tutor, support is the most important thing we can do to students. I believe a tutor should be a mentor, someone the student can relate to and feel comfortable expressing their problems to, but should also be assertive and draw the line between being professional and being a friend. I think a tutor should do her best to teach the student to the best of his/her abilities, even if that means going slightly over…

Inside Noble ParkTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Jay tackled simultaneous equations and practiced pattern recognition by working through John Monash practice questions.

For Year 9, Lisa focused on simple interest calculations and solving more advanced simultaneous equations, using both textbook problems and applied examples.

Meanwhile, Year 4 student Noah worked on multiplication concepts—specifically two-digit by one-digit multiplication—and explored division as forming equal groups with visual aids.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 mathematics, not bringing the correct equipment and materials—despite reminders—meant lesson time was lost reorganizing instead of problem-solving. As a tutor observed, "he needs to be more diligent in keeping notes and having his materials ready for tutoring."

For a Year 9 student, an over-reliance on technology led to skipping written working in algebra; missing steps caused confusion when checking answers.

In primary (Year 3), incomplete homework limited consolidation of times tables and multiplication skills, leaving basic errors uncorrected.

After setbacks in essay writing (Year 10 English), frustration quickly set in, making it harder to recover confidence mid-task.

Recent Achievements

One Noble Park tutor noticed that a Year 9 student, Seth, who previously hesitated to ask questions when confused, has started actively seeking clarification during sessions and now explains his logic before hearing the answer—showing real independence.

In Year 10 English, Mitchell shifted from being unsure about how to start argument analyses to confidently drafting introductions on his own and identifying authors' main arguments without prompting.

Meanwhile, in Year 3 maths, Florian—who used to be quiet and unfocused—now talks through problem-solving steps out loud and checks his work independently after adopting new strategies with the whiteboard.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Dingley Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Noble Park Primary School.
