Identifying the individual's strengths and weaknesses. Not only trying to help building on the weak points, but also reassuring and building their confidence by highlighting how much they already know. Also finding a strategy that they learn best, e.g. explaining new concepts by touching on processes they are already familiar with. I believe two…

The important thing a tutor can do for a student is make them feel more confident about their abilities and knowledge. The more they can back them-self, the more they can be composed in a test environment, the better they perform in test conditions, the better their marks. Like a positive feedback loop, this will also increase confidence;better…

The goal of a tutor is to help the students gain confidence in their subject and help the student with their grades. It is important a tutor is able to help a student gain enjoyment from the subject so that they are inspired and happy to continue to study when the tutor is not around. Illustrating the solution, explaining with the right examples, respecting everyone's views and value every question however simple it maybe. Making the discourse interesting and interactive. I want my students to leave each lesson feeling more capable than when they arrived. Every student learns differently, so I would take the time to…

The most important thing a tutor can do is to understand the pupil’s learning style and adapt the teaching to which best suits the pupil. It is imperative to understand that everyone absorbs knowledge differently and thus it is importantly that a tutor understands that and adapts accordingly. I think one extremely important thing a tutor can do is to adapt their teaching to the individual needs and abilities of each student, and adapt themselves to the student, not force the student to adapt to them. This involves listening to the student and observing how they work and then responding to those things. Another extremely important thing…

If I can make a student begin thinking more about the subject than just a grade to obtain, I would have felt that I made one more curious person. 1. Be patient to students. Sometimes tutor need to explain a concept or questions multiple times to students until they understand it. So patience is very important. 2. Tutor should motivate students to exercise. Exercise is very important for students. It can help students know how to use the concept. 3. Tutor can help student build a good way…

Inside NollamaraTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 9 student Lily worked on graphing linear relationships and substituting values into functions to understand how equations change, using examples to visualise results.

Another Year 9 student focused on properties of parallel lines and triangles, including calculating midpoint, length, gradient, and solving for unknown angles with step-by-step reasoning.

For a senior high school student, recent sessions covered complex numbers—identifying real and imaginary parts in standard form—and optimisation problems by expressing variables in terms of one another and differentiating to find maximum or minimum values.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 Chemistry student, after making progress with titration calculations, still left much of the required working out incomplete on her worksheet—"only wrote about half of the notes of what was required," noted one tutor.

In Year 10 Mathematics, another student repeatedly skipped showing algebra steps, especially in problems involving decimals; this often masked sign errors and made it difficult to track mistakes.

Meanwhile, a Year 8 student lost motivation after setbacks with long division—struggling to continue after finding remainders, leading to frustration and reluctance to attempt similar questions later in the lesson.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Nollamara noticed a Year 11 student who began the term confused about when to use sine, cosine, or tangent now confidently tackles trigonometry problems and recently clarified bearing directions independently.

In another session, a Year 12 student initially struggled with equilibrium equations in Chemistry but persisted through targeted practice—by lesson's end, he was solving redox reactions without prompting.

Meanwhile, a younger student who once avoided pen and paper now eagerly writes out each step for multi-digit division and even shouted "YES I LOVE DIVISION WITH REMAINDERS!" after solving several on her own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Osborne Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like West Coast Steiner School.
