I believe the most important thing an english tutor can do for a student is the ability for the student to develop a independent style of learning and facing adversities with a strategy in mind. This allows the student to not only develop academically but also fosters a lifestyle of learning that will help them transition into high education. I am…

I believe that the most important thing an english tutor can do for their student is to approach topics that the student is finding difficult differently. When approaching the topic differently it can aid the student in seeing it from a different angle and which way they learn best. I am a very organised and patient person, that strives for the…

The most important things an english tutor can do for a student are to listen to them to gauge their level of knowledge and interest in a subject, then to offer motivation and positive reinforcement. This gives the student the confidence to help 'drive' the learning process, with the tutor guiding that process by offering information, skills and…

I believe the most important thing an english tutor can do for a student is to encourage the individual to be more confident in their own abilities. This can be achieved by showing the student the most appropriate way to tackle the problem, and then rewarding them when they are able to complete the problem without any assistance. This should…

I believe one of the most important things an english tutor can do is create a space where the student feels comfortable asking questions and making mistakes. Learning can be frustrating at times, so it is really important to be encouraging and supportive. A good tutor does not just help with the content - they help build the student's confidence.…

Through tips and shortcuts, the student will confidently answer questions. The tutor also expands the student's knowledge by providing exposure to different learning materials. With these both, the…

The most important thing an english tutor can do for a student is help them understand a topic in a way that they understand. What I mean by this, is that not one student is the same as another. Some are visual learners and need practical explanations or materials to assist them to understand, others students may be auditory learners who require…

I consider the most important thing an english tutor can do for their student is make their teaching environment comfortable. Without this transparency I believe it’s very hard to teach and fully understand our students…

The power of being non-judgmental. A tutor must understand that every student has different learning capabilities and focus more on students that find it difficult to grasp concepts without belittling them. I believe I have two strengths as a tutor- 1. I do not follow the status quo/ set pattern of teaching. I like to mix things up so that my…

Inside North CoogeeTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Chinnu worked on multiplying, dividing, and simplifying fractions, as well as exploring how short division methods can support fraction calculations.

In Year 10, Ethan focused on parabolas and quadratic equations, including a pre-test review of these concepts with problem-solving strategies.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Zoe tackled Graph Theory topics such as Eulerian and Semi-Eulerian paths and practiced breaking down complex problems into smaller steps for more effective problem solving.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student often disengaged from problem-solving in maths when an answer wasn't immediately clear, saying "I don't know how to do that" and moving on without applying strategies practiced together. This avoidance made it harder to build confidence and fluency with challenging content.

In Year 5, another student repeatedly left homework incomplete, especially with fraction number line revision—uncertainty about instructions was left unaddressed instead of seeking clarification. As one tutor noted, "he just decides he doesn't know it and moves on," which meant less exposure to new problem types and missed opportunities for feedback.

Recent Achievements

A North Coogee tutor noticed a big shift in Harrison (Year 11), who, after initially missing key ideas about parabolas and quadratics, could explain their main features independently by the second week.

Meanwhile, Dominique (Year 8) began actively asking for help when stuck—last term she hesitated and rarely spoke up, but now she voices her questions right away and tries out "thinking aloud" strategies.

For a younger student, Chinnu (Year 4), blending art with maths led to much quicker times tables recall; last session he completed his graphing homework neatly and even set his own targets for next time.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Spearwood Public Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Fremantle Christian College.
