Guiding the student if they need help, but leaving most of the problem solving up to them so that student builds a deeper understanding of the content and creates the connections rather than just memorising information. I'm very knowledgeable in the subjects I teach, and I have useful study techniques that can help my students. I also understand…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student are being patient and empathetic, especially when the student is struggling. A tutor should also build their student's confidence by tailoring lessons that will be most effective for the student, giving them clear explanations of concepts, and by creating a safe learning environment that…

First and foremost it would be building a strong rapport with the student and gaining mutual trust and respect. This builds a foundation of confidence and comfort which optimises a students ability to learn and their attitude towards learning. Tutors should be adaptable and be able to target the teaching to each students unique way of learning. …

The most important thing is to ensure that a student properly understands the task in front of them so that at a later stage, they are able to work independently and without assistance. A tutor also needs to remain positive and act as a positive influence over the student and ensure the student feels safe and comfortable at all times. I am…

Strictly in terms of ATAR, to help students do and understand past exams so when the real exams come, they would feel less stressed and more "at home" with the topics being examined, whilst being able to manage time well due to them having done similar past exam questions as routine. But in terms of tutoring, actually helping the student…

I think the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to build their confidence, provide clarity on challenging concepts, and, most importantly, inspire a genuine curiosity to learn more. A good tutor should create an environment where students feel supported, ask questions freely, and explore topics beyond the lesson because they…

I can make the student not only competent, but also comfortable and confident in a certain topic. I understand how stressful hard subjects can be. I want to take away the feeling of fear when students enter a class they think they're not good in. Another thing is teaching a student to be an autodidact. I was fortunate enough to know this tactic…

I believe that the most important thing a tutor can do is care and be dedicated. I think you have to really care about the student doing well rather than just focusing on the payment, a tutor should also be dedicated to the student so that they get the best service and help possible. I believe a tutor should create a positive and encouraging environment where the student feels safe to ask questions, make mistakes, and learn at their own pace. A tutor should also provide clear, step-by-step explanations, breaking down complex concepts into simpler, digestible parts. Lastly, tailoring lessons to student's specific needs and…

A tutor should make the student feel capable by building understanding, not just giving answers. The most important thing is to teach students how to think and solve problems independently, while also giving them confidence and structure. As stated in the previous section, I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to listen. Although we are there to direct their study, there are a range of other things a student may face in their life. I'm not there just as an academic instructor, I also want to be able to relate to the person in front of me and assist them…

The important thing a tutor can do is to have patience and belief for their student. There will be times where the student will struggle even after a tutor shows or explains the problem. As the tutor, you have to show patience and not add extra pressure and stress for the student. Believing in the student will help them be more motivated and to…

One of the things I consider the most important for a tutor to do for a student is to have patience and be amicable so that students don't feel pressured or stressed during sessions. Tutors have two roles, One is to actively support the student who might be struggling to cope up with their peers and/or looking to improve their performance. The second is to make the student learn in a different environment from their school. Schools have multiple children and every child has some issue they are facing. As a tutor sitting 1-1…

Inside North CoogeeTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Chinnu worked on multiplying, dividing, and simplifying fractions, as well as exploring how short division methods can support fraction calculations.

In Year 10, Ethan focused on parabolas and quadratic equations, including a pre-test review of these concepts with problem-solving strategies.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Zoe tackled Graph Theory topics such as Eulerian and Semi-Eulerian paths and practiced breaking down complex problems into smaller steps for more effective problem solving.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student often disengaged from problem-solving in maths when an answer wasn't immediately clear, saying "I don't know how to do that" and moving on without applying strategies practiced together. This avoidance made it harder to build confidence and fluency with challenging content.

In Year 5, another student repeatedly left homework incomplete, especially with fraction number line revision—uncertainty about instructions was left unaddressed instead of seeking clarification. As one tutor noted, "he just decides he doesn't know it and moves on," which meant less exposure to new problem types and missed opportunities for feedback.

Recent Achievements

A North Coogee tutor noticed a big shift in Harrison (Year 11), who, after initially missing key ideas about parabolas and quadratics, could explain their main features independently by the second week.

Meanwhile, Dominique (Year 8) began actively asking for help when stuck—last term she hesitated and rarely spoke up, but now she voices her questions right away and tries out "thinking aloud" strategies.

For a younger student, Chinnu (Year 4), blending art with maths led to much quicker times tables recall; last session he completed his graphing homework neatly and even set his own targets for next time.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Spearwood Public Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Fremantle Christian College.
