By building a strong mentor relationship with the student, we can help build confidence in the student to develop their academic and interpersonal skills by providing them support. I think the most important thing a tutor can do is ensure the student knows we are on their side and only want them to improve. To create a comfortable places where all questions, marks, practise papers and ideas can be discussed without judgement. To be a person where they can just focus on improvement and nothing else I think my greatest…

A tutor is there both to teach content and to improve a student's study habits. Seeking advice from teachers, peers, and my past tutor, I have developed helpful study skills and I recognise inefficient habits. I have gained an appreciation for tuning study practices to the individual for optimal results. Learning to work with my ADHD has…

A tutor needs to genuinely want the students to learn out of every session and care for the students. The tutor needs to be 100% focused on every second of the session. A tutor should provide a safe space for the student, both academically and mentally. It is important that a tutor empathizes with the students and provide them vivid and interesting perspectives about the subjects which goes beyond school learning. Furthermore, it is needed that the tutor - student relationship be a team work, where the tutor is…

I believe it is extremely important for a tutor to have similar hobbies or experiences to the student so that the student feels comfortable and safe by taking out the power balance many often feel between their tutor or teacher. This also helps as content taught in our sessions will flow better, and create more engagement from the student. Having…

A tutor is solely responsible for shaping a students life. I consider the tutor to be committed in understanding what type of student he/she handles, since all of them aren't the same. Analyzing the talents of students and guiding them in a friendly way, will definitely motivate them to perform better. The teacher must be strong with the subject,…

Inside North TurramurraTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Lucas practised simple division and tackled worded problems to strengthen his foundational numeracy.

For Year 11, Sophia focused on normal distribution and worked through her areas of difficulty using trial HSC exam papers.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student James reviewed the balance of payments, covering both current and capital accounts, and explored how exchange rates are affected by demand and supply for the Australian dollar, using past HSC short-answer questions for practice.

Recent Challenges

A Year 12 student working on calculus struggled to set out homework clearly, which made it difficult to identify where his thinking broke down—"his understanding of calculus & his homework setting out" was a tutor's observation.

In Year 11 Economics, one student often skipped writing formulas for opportunity cost and labour force participation rate, so errors crept in unnoticed when revising calculations.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 student avoided showing division steps in maths problems; as the tutor noted, "divisions and reading questions" required extra attention because missing working led to repeated confusion over basic procedures.

Recent Achievements

One North Turramurra tutor noticed a big shift with a Year 12 student who, after struggling to tell apart the different balance of payments accounts in economics, now accurately distinguishes between them and explains what drives deficits or surpluses.

In Year 11 maths, another student had trouble with fractions on a previous test but recently solved fraction problems independently, showing the extra practice paid off.

Meanwhile, a primary school student who used to rush through questions has started pausing to read each one carefully before answering—a noticeable change in approach during recent sessions.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as St Ives Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Turramurra North Public School.
