As a tutor, it is very important that the teacher becomes an inspiration to the student. The passion with which the tutor teaches the student matters a lot and this also influences the students influence on the subject. When a tutor teaches the student with passion, the student is definitely going to like the subject and learn with full passion as…

Interactive studies make students remember and understand topics really well. If a tutor can help the student to enjoy the subjects, then it becomes an activity which…

In my opinion, being a person that students are comfortable with to reach out for help is one of the most important things. A tutor should be there to assist them, not add stress or pressure to them. I also think it is important for tutors to motivate the students to learn, instead of just giving answers, and in motivating them, tutors should be…

The most important thing is trust that both tutor and student should have on each other. An ease of asking questions and making mistakes is another very important thing. Its okay to make mistakes but if your student is afraid of you , they would never ask questions and will be afraid to make mistakes so the tutor will never be able to…

Tutors are expected to bolster student grades however this is not their true purpose, A tutor should help to develop students to not only achieve greater marks but also to have a greater understanding of the field they are being tutored in. This should extend beyond the tutoring time as the student develops the skills required to support…

For me, the most important thing is helping students actually enjoy math and feel comfortable with the process of not knowing right away. A lot of math is about sitting with that discomfort, resisting the urge to panic, and trusting that if you think logically, you’ll find a way through—even if it’s not the “textbook†method. I want…

The most important thing in teaching any subject is showing the big picture along with the nitty-gritty. Adam has been a wonderful tutor for Lauren not only is she catching up on her maths but her confidence has improved dramatically.
Michelle, North Adelaide

Inside OvinghamTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Nia focused on algebraic expansion and the difference of two squares, working through examples to build confidence with expressions.

Year 9 student Sam tackled solving simultaneous equations using elimination and practised graphing linear equations by hand.

For a Year 7 student, recent sessions included revising fraction rules and strategies for solving equations, with extra attention given to converting fractions into decimals using long division.

Recent Challenges

A Year 5 student's maths work was sometimes hard to follow, with "spacing out her writing" suggested so she could spot errors more easily.

In Year 7 algebra, one learner repeatedly confused sign-changing rules even when notes were on hand; as the tutor put it, "she made the same mistake regarding 'sign changing' very often despite being reminded and her notes are available."

In a recent Year 10 test week, another student forgot to let the tutor know about an upcoming assessment—missing valuable prep time.

A Year 9 learner occasionally skipped homework altogether, which meant less practice with worded problems.

Recent Achievements

One Ovingham tutor noticed a big shift with Athena, a high school student who used to hesitate with algebra but tackled most test problems on her own and even scored 87%.

In another session, Constanza, also in high school, began asking more questions instead of waiting for prompts—she'd previously been quiet during lessons but now confidently checks her understanding as she works through equations.

Meanwhile, Valentina in Year 5 started writing out her thought process while solving fraction problems; she'd struggled to explain her steps before but is now much clearer and finished all ten homework questions without errors.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Adelaide City Libraries - Tynte Street—or at your child's school (with permission), like Immaculate Heart of Mary School.
