The most important thing a tutor can do for their students, besides helping them improve in their areas of need, is to support them and encourage them to perform to their very best and increase their confidence in their abilities in order to do well in exams. My strengths are my approachable nature as well as my understanding of the students'…

Ensure students understand the issues. One of the most rewarding aspects was witnessing my students' gradual improvement in not only their technical skills but their confidence in the subject. Mentoring and conveying to the students what is required to solve the problems. Always try to show what are the rules/principles behind any of the…

I believe one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is serve as a secondary teacher/mentor to a school teacher. As school teachers have to focus on a large class (usually around 30 students), they are unable to address the needs of each student. As each student has their own struggles and needs, an exterior tutor provides…

I think above all else, the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to help them and give them the necessary skills and understanding to be able to work independently, and to better understand the studying strategy that suits them best. It is important that a tutor is able to teach a student but more important than this is that a…

I think that most students aren't too interested in most subjects. So for a tutor, it is basically a must that they can make their lesson at least somewhat engaging for their students (since they are having time taken out of their life just to study more, there's a high likelihood that they're even more disinterested). The next most important…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to understand their behaviour towards learning, which will help assist in getting them to learn and grow as a student. As a tutor I will go the extra mile for them as long as they are willing to go the extra mile with me in terms of learning and practicing. My strength is my patience and…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is to be continually assessing how the student is going and adapting their lesson to ensure the student is always progressing and is engaged. Moreover, I consider availability of tutors to be extremely important for students, where they can access the tutors help at reasonable hours during the school week, which may extend past their scheduled…

The most important thing a tutor can do is to ensure their student comes out with the confidence and competence required of a diligent learner. A tutor should not only mechanically explain and teach knowledge to a student - they should accomodate for the student's own learning needs, explain questions in a digestible, easy way and ensure the…

Tutoring in my opinion is not only putting pen to paper. I believe as a tutor it is vital to offer the students a level of support that encourages them to want to progress in their education, it is important to understand the individual you are tutoring as not only will it make them feel seen it will also massively improve their learning…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is instead of providing answers, ask the students open-ended questions that guide the students to the conclusion themselves. Lecturing about the topic may work for some, but to others, the content is easily disposable/forgotten or the student has mentally checked out halfway through the…

Understanding the issues of a student. I believe that tutors should be able to understand why a student is struggling with something, and help them according to their strengths and weaknesses. A student won't be able to learn with advice that isn't applicable to them, because everyone's capability to learn isn't at the same level. Gaining a…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to address their needs and help them achieve their goal to the best of their ability. For this to happen there needs to be a clear understanding of what the student's goal(s) is and from there begin establishing a solid foundation for communication. It is important to maintain this…

The most important thing a tutor can do is believe in the student. This along with teaching them the value of hard work is significant as it pushes a student to access their potential knowing that they are supported. The value of hard work is also an imperative that should be conveyed through the tutors lessons regardless of the content taught. I…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is build a student’s confidence in their own ability. There are 3 things a tutor must do in order to be successful and respected: listen, care and try (all three of these are my strongest points). Listen. Students often feel overwhelmed and are unable to understand content because they don’t feel they are truly being listened to - something I relate to as a former student, and can easily combat by employing listening as paramount. Inside PadstowTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Pranay focused on spelling difficult words and improving his story writing by revising descriptive introductions, while also practising basic reading and comprehension skills.

Year 6 student Beau worked through multiplying and dividing fractions as well as order of operations, with extra practice using maths mentals exercises to strengthen understanding.

Meanwhile, Year 6 student Grace tackled equivalent fractions—learning how to cancel them out—and moved into adding and subtracting decimals, often applying concepts through worked examples in her homework.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 English, not applying written feedback on story drafts meant improvements in structure and clarity were missed—one note read, "I have given him both verbal and written feedback... I would like him to start applying it."

A Year 7 student hesitated to ask questions during class or tutoring, missing chances to clarify misunderstood concepts.

In Year 6 maths, skipping working out led to difficulties tracing errors later ("she is forgetting to show this when answering questions both during the tutoring session and whilst completing homework").

By lesson's end, a Year 7 student often disengaged, leaving harder problems unfinished.

Recent Achievements

One Padstow tutoring session saw a high school student, Noah, take real ownership of his study by breaking down an English assessment with the tutor and independently committing to submit a final essay draft by a set deadline—a big shift from needing step-by-step guidance.

Another win came when Robine, also in high school, started leaving questions blank in her homework if she was unsure, instead of guessing—she now actively asks for help so she can fix mistakes together during sessions.

Meanwhile, younger student Pranay proudly shared that he's begun regularly asking his teacher clarifying questions at school when confused.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Padstow Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Southside Montessori School.
