Tutors ought to make themselves available and ready to support students. If they present themselves to students as approachable and knowledgeable, then students will feel comfortable asking questions and also feel ready to trust in the supportive answers and feedback a tutor gives. I trust that everyone who feels comfortable to apply to be a…

I believe one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to use personalised strategies that suit the student's learning style so that they can benefit from their one-on-one lessons in a way that they don't have the opportunity to in the classroom. I also believe it is important for a tutor to understand both the strengths and…

A teacher/tutor is someone who can teach. But a good teacher/tutor is someone who can inspire students. I strongly believe that I can inspire others through my own passion and love with Maths. I teach my students strategies to solve problem rather giving them answers so that they can self develope and tackle harder problems I was good at Maths…

Be respectful and patient. It's essential to understand the students' needs and preferred methods of learning, as everyone's habits are so different. It's best to approach the lessons with the student's perspective in mind. I am a patient, down-to-earth person who prefers having a friendly relationship with the student so that they will feel…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student are threefold. First, build confidence, many students already know more than they think, but anxiety or past frustration gets in the way. A tutor should help them trust their own ability. Second, teach how to think, not just what to think. In subjects like chemistry and physics,…

A tutor must help a student develop their knowledge of a subject whilst providing them with the tools to become an independent, inquiring learner so that they can eventually succeed independently. I believe the most important thing is for a tutor to help students ask the right questions in their learning journey, rather than just helping them find…

Being patient and guide them through how they should solve their problems instead of forcing only one way to them. Give them examples on how things should be with the aid of diagrams to picture the problem to them and make them think of the solution instead of blindly giving them answers. I think a tutor must be extremely understanding of a students concerns and queries regarding their work. Also, not only must a tutor be well versed in the content, they must also develop ways to explain these concepts to students who have a lack of understanding or no understanding at all, tailored to the needs of that particular individual. I am…

A tutor should always allow a student to figure out problem entirely by themselves. The worst thing to do is to solve everything for the student. A student should feel he/she is a smart logical human being, he/she just need a bit of guidance and assistance, however, no one undermines his/her abilities. I am patient and enthusiastic at the same…

The priorities in my perspective are both academic and enjoyment. And in terms of enjoyment, tutor can try best to make the lesson enjoyable and engaging for the students which can be beneficial for their…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to improve their confidence and self-esteem. I find with many of my past students, they posses the skills to complete assignments but simply don't believe in themselves. Recieving poor or mediocre grades can crush a students morale leading to a bitterness towards a subect. This tends to be a…

It's often frustrating not to understand what is being taught in class and feeling behind. To boost confidence and motivation. I believe that you cannot force a student to learn, but you can guide them to do their best. If the student does not wish to learn, there is not much I can do to improve their grades. But, if the students are highly motivated and willing to learn, even if their grades are below average, they can rapidly improve…

Local Reviews

While it seemed to take a little while to pair with a tutor, the match was perfect. I couldn't be happier with the service. Definitely worth the conversation if you have a child with a specific need. We are already seeing improvements after only a few sessions.
Imelda Patton, Pascoe Vale

Inside Pascoe Vale SouthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Tania reviewed the rules for indices and surds, practiced operations with both, and worked through questions involving addition, subtraction, and rationalising denominators.

Year 10 student Lucas focused on quadratic equations by factorising both monic and non-monic trinomials as well as solving quadratics using the quadratic formula.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Sarah tackled trigonometry applications including bearings and word problems requiring angles of elevation and depression.

Recent Challenges

In Year 7, one student's handwriting and arrangement of working out led to confusion during calculation—in factorisation tasks, this meant both the tutor and student lost time trying to decipher steps.

A Year 8 learner arrived unprepared, having forgotten textbooks and lacking familiarity with digital tools, which limited engagement in the session.

For a Year 10 algebra class, "just reading notes and doing practice questions" without tackling unfamiliar problems slowed progress on the unit circle topic.

In VCE Chemistry, skipping careful checks after calculations led to unnoticed errors; as a tutor observed: "methodical calculations were needed but not always followed through."

Recent Achievements

One Pascoe Vale South tutor noticed a big change in a Year 10 student who had struggled with factorisation; this time, he was able to construct several examples independently and tackle key homework steps that were previously out of reach.

In a senior session, a Year 12 student began deriving equations correctly for the first time—something she'd hesitated over before—and even worked through problems involving limits and derivatives with much less prompting.

Meanwhile, a younger student who used to quietly muddle through reading now reads fluently and enunciates well, only occasionally needing encouragement to project his voice.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Campbell-Turnbull Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Antonine College.
