According to me, the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is be a good listener. It is very important to know and understand why a student is facing a problem in a particular situation so that it can be tackled. The tutor should also be compassionate and patient toward the student and should be able to adapt themselves as per the…

To be able to identify the students strengths and weaknesses before coming up with a teaching method that is suitable to their most preferred way of learning and the way of learning that they would be able to benefit most from. Additionally, making sure the student is comfortable enough to share what they do not understand or to feedback on what…

A tutor above all else needs to encourage students to strive to be better in all facets of learning. As required a tutor should also be a mentor and counsellor and provide students with an atmosphere conducive to developing strong learning skills. I am compassionate , patient and understanding. In addition to inculcating academic knowledge in students, a tutor can help students become more passionate towards a subject and can enable the student to grow as a holistic individual by providing moral support and mentorship for the student and helping the student grow in his/her values. I believe that I am extremely patient and do not mind…

I consider a tutor responsibility towards students is to be committed and flexible. The tutor should be with their student even if both have been going through the exam period. The tutor should never cancel on a lesson with a student for their own studies. As well, it is a must to be patient towards the student and be flexible as a tutor to learn…

I think patience is the biggest key factor as without that there can be no way a tutor could help a student. It is important to build a relationship with the student and to always guide them but not push them to their limits. It is also important that the student understands how its done, while having them memorise a pattern is easy, allowing them to understand how to solve these types of questions will allow them to apply their solution to more things.…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do are: 1) provide clarity, 2) build confidence, and 3) foster independent thinking. A good tutor doesn't just help students get the right answers, they help students understand the process and develop the skills to tackle future challenges on their own. Encouraging students to ask questions, think…

The tutor should understand his subject matter to be able to deliver complicated ideas to the students simply and concisely. If the tutor cannot do so, he should further his knowledge of that subject matter. I love to use descriptive and outside the box methods to understand mathematical concepts. I think the most important thing a tutor can do is to teach a student how to pursue their own studies, that is, if I can teach a student how to study without the need for a tutor, that's worth more than tutoring them the whole year and it will serve them well for the rest of their life. An excellent tutor will keep their students motivated and…

I think the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to build their confidence, provide clarity on challenging concepts, and, most importantly, inspire a genuine curiosity to learn more. A good tutor should create an environment where students feel supported, ask questions freely, and explore topics beyond the lesson because they…

Inside Peppermint GroveTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Ella focused on converting between fractions, decimals, and percentages, then practiced applying these conversions in simple word problems.

Year 8 student Daniel worked through solving linear equations with pronumerals—including those with fractions—and expanded brackets while reviewing how to combine like terms.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Sophie revised circle theorems by working on proofs and terminology before practicing setting out formal solutions for tangent-related questions.

Recent Challenges

Several process-related habits impacted learning this term across multiple year levels.

In Year 9, a student regularly tried to solve equations in her head instead of showing all working, which led to "a lot of careless mistakes along the way" and made it harder for her to spot errors under test conditions.

For a Year 11 student, homework was sometimes incomplete or forgotten entirely—one lesson note simply read, "Did not complete homework," meaning new concepts like polynomial division had to be retaught from scratch rather than extended.

Messy working and unclear graph sketches in senior years also caused confusion during revision and assessment.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Peppermint Grove recently saw a Year 9 student start attempting all their algebra questions independently before asking for help, a big shift from earlier sessions where they'd wait for guidance.

In Year 11, one student who used to rush through homework began checking her answers and caught several careless mistakes on her own.

Another win came from a Year 7 session: after struggling with short division at first, the student now completes these problems confidently and sets out their working much more clearly than before, even finishing an entire worksheet without needing reminders.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Claremont Community Hub & Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Presbyterian Ladies' College.
