As a tutor, I believe in catering to the students needs. Different students have different learning styles, so it is important to adapt my teaching styles to the individual. I also think compassion and understanding are necessary traits for tutors. Every student learns at different paces, and can grasp certain topics quicker than others. Patience…

To help develop the conceptual understanding of the subject followed by in-depth expertise in the subject that not only raises their grades substantially but also helps them to cope with time-management skills, encourages discussion among themselves and improves self-confidence in them. I am very friendly, teach like a story-teller, use innovative…

In my opinion, the key thing to teach a student is independence. The more I can help a student become independent in their study, the better stead they'll be in for exams, revision and further education, as a passion for learning the material by your own merit is the key for future success. If I can pass on the passion I have for maths, teach my…

Be patient and actually encourage them to study and work hard. I like to start each session by actually asking them about their goals and if they have a set goal motivate them to pursue it. Explain it to them grades are important and make a big difference. Also, always let them know ask any single thing they want. The more questions the more they…

Building a caring relationship in my opinion is the most important thing a tutor can do for any student. It is only that foundation can a tutor be able to deliver his best and at the same time the student will be keen to learn. It is the conducive learning environment that a tutor has to provide to enable the student to work to his/her maximum…

I believe that the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to not teach them how to answer a specific question but to ensure they understand the logic behind the answering methodology. I suspect that this may be hard for some students at first but I am confident that they will be able to get the most out of mathematics and other…

Be passionate about what you're teaching is the most important thing a tutor can do for their student so that they enjoy learning their subject and hopefully become keen to practice it after tutor hours. This can be difficult to achieve in Maths, especially in school. I think my strengths are my passion for Mathematics and my passion to see…

I think that the most important thing a tutor can do is give a student confidence in themselves. It is not the tutor's job to simply pass on their own knowledge, but rather to show the student that they had the ability to excel on their own all along. Tutors can do this by explaining concepts in a new way or more slowly than they may have been…

Empathy! Having a tutor that struggles (hopefully not anymore) with a subject definitely helps because they are able to understand what you are doing through and are less likely to get frustrated that you cannot grasp a concept, no matter how "simple" it may be. I'm wonderful at communication, I'm patient/do not get frustrated easily, and I am…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to believe in them and remind them of their potential. It is also necessary to give students personalised advice to ensure they target their time and energy in the right tasks, especially in…

A good tutor can analyse the strengths and weaknesses of students, and guide them accordingly. Mathematics is all about practice and being exposed to different variations of questions, and a tutor should be able to acknowledge the students' situation and prepare the most suitable practice exercises for them. The bare minimum a tutor should do is to aid a student in their academic journey, however the optimal result would be for tutors to create an enjoyable learning experience for the student. Specifically in mathematics, I believe I have the creativity to come up with multiple approaches to a certain problem. Thinking outside of the box, I could show…

Personally, I believe that tutors play the most crucial role in facilitating a nurturing and interactive learning space, catering their teachings to the student's individual requirements, and offering personalized help, guidance and feedback too. A tutor should be a good listener in order to understand the problem that a student is facing. Identify the student's strengths , their interests and translate into learning. Inside PetershamTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Jack worked on algebra word problems and probability, applying these skills to real-life scenarios.

In Year 4, Harry focused on solving multiplication questions and was introduced to number sequences for pattern recognition.

Meanwhile, Kyah (Year 6) revised perimeter concepts and practised converting between millimetres, centimetres, and kilometres while reading maps for her homework.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 mathematics, a student's written work was often unclear, making it hard to trace errors and slowing progress in algebra. As one tutor noted, "the way she sets out her work will greatly improve her understanding and reduce errors."

Meanwhile, a Year 11 student working on essays tended to overcomplicate arguments instead of building ideas step by step; this led to confusion mid-way through responses.

For a primary student in Year 4, loss of focus at the start of lessons meant new concepts like time or division took longer to grasp, even after warm-up activities.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Petersham noticed Emily now tells her tutor when she's stuck instead of staying quiet—last session, she worked through tricky area problems independently after asking for help.

Jason (Year 10) has started tackling unfamiliar maths questions on his own; although confused at first, he finished the lesson answering new concepts without support.

In Year 4, Zoe previously hesitated to participate but recently completed multiplication questions independently and stayed focused much longer than before. At the end of that lesson, she answered every problem on her own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Stanmore Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Petersham Public School.
