A tutor must be calm at all times and not get frustrated at students when concepts need some extra explanation or clarification. This was something that I struggled with while getting tutored throughout school, and from that experience I realised how valuable understanding can be to a tutoring experience. I think my main strengths as a tutor is my…

I think the most important thing for a tutor is to understand what the student needs and work through those blocks with positive reinforcement. Some students have a hard time understanding concepts while others have no faith in themselves and struggle to retain information. The most important things a tutor can do are foster confidence, curiosity, and provide tailored support. By creating a positive, non-judgmental space, a tutor helps students feel safe to ask questions and make mistakes. Encouraging curiosity keeps learning engaging but also fun for both student and tutor. Finally, adapting to each student’s…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is make a student believe they are capable. A lot of students have already decided they are bad at the subject, so rebuilding that confidence comes first. From there it is about helping them understand the thinking behind an answer, not just the answer itself. If they only memorise a method they…

One of the most important things that a tutor can do for a student is understanding and respecting them. As tutors, we should provide a safe space for students that would make them realise that it is okay to make a mistake. Next, we should also make students feel that they can achieve their academic goals. Continuously giving them positive feedback is helpful as well because it would motivate them to work harder. And lastly, as tutors, we should…

The most important thing is to be of assistance. Every student has the potential to achieve good marks and be great at something. We as tutors need to learn and understand students as individuals. Inside PlumptonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 12 student Georgia focused on HSC-style trigonometry questions and revising her recent exam paper, targeting past mistakes.

For Year 11, Zara worked through differentiation using first principles as well as algebraic equations from her school maths assignment.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Daniel practised probability questions from previous HSC papers and explored applications of trigonometry in bearings problems, often using real-world scenarios to reinforce concepts.

Recent Challenges

Several process-related challenges were observed across different year levels.

In Year 9, one student left homework incomplete for over two weeks, causing her to forget recently taught algebra skills; as the tutor noted, "this was shown through the lesson today."

A Year 11 student's exam performance suffered due to poor time management—he rushed only near the end, missing easy marks earlier.

In Year 7 mathematics, written work often lacked clear layout and full working out, especially on multi-mark problems, making it hard to spot where understanding broke down.

When assignments or practice were delayed or skipped, progress slowed and confidence dipped.

Recent Achievements

A Plumpton tutor recently noticed a Year 11 student, Ryan, who used to leave tricky HSC-style questions blank, now attempts every problem and explains his reasoning out loud—even when unsure.

In Year 9 maths, Ali has started tackling differentiation proofs with less hesitation, remembering key identities without needing reminders like before.

Meanwhile, Shay in Year 5 managed the extension section of her homework with minimal help after previously struggling to stay focused; she finished all tasks without distraction and got nearly every answer right on her own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Mt Druitt Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Plumpton Public School.
