I believe the most important thing for a tutor is to listen to and understand their student's weaknesses and strengths. Often I find many people lack personalisation and simply follow the curriculum. I like to take a different approach where I really personalise my teaching depending on the student's capabilities and learning style. I also find…

Listen to the students and understand what the actual issue is. More often than not it's not the concept itself but how the student is processing the concept, and if you don't see that you'll only be able to help them understand through repetition. My ability to tailor lessons to a students needs and study styles. I enjoy working with both…

Sometimes its difficult to read what is going inside a students head and maybe student says he/she understands the subject but in reality they are just shy to ask questions As a tutor I can have some informal tests to see whether the student is understanding. A good tutor should always focus on qualitative approach rather than quantitative…

As a tutor, I encourage my students to truly understand the course material, rather than aimlessly memorize the content. To do this it is important to be supportive, but firm. Ultimately, I want to help my students recognize the potential within themselves. I graduated in 2019 with an ATAR of 99.00. I have tutored 14 students over 3 years. I am…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to stay patient with him or her when they are not able get hold of a concept. That is what differentiates a great teacher from a good teacher. I believe it's crucial for the instructor to first comprehend the student. As a former tutor, I am of the opinion that not every lesson is fully understood by students the first time around. The tutor must make sure to reiterate everything till the student is able to grasp it. As was previously mentioned, a tutor must be on time and patient with…

According to me, a tutor can help his student improve and be a stepping stone in achieving his goals . Tutor should guide the student to think independently and creatively. This enables the student to form their own ideas and understand a concept in from different point of views instead of just following steps and rules. These skills are crucial for a student especially in the latter part of their school life. When I teach, I will put myself in the…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is help a student feel like they can actually handle the work on their own. It Is easy to just give someone the answers, but that doesn't help them in the long run. Since I'm majoring in psychology, I try to focus on building their confidence and helping them get past that "mental block" where they…

The most important thing is to engage with the student. It is more beneficial for the student and tutor to work together and be open to new ideas or methods to tackle questions. An important thing would be to instil a sense of confidence in a student about a particular subject, theory, or whatever it is that they are struggling with. Without confidence, even if a student may know the content or understand the theory, it can be difficult to do well in that subject. This is achieved by repeating a concept or practising it a…

A tutor must be understanding and patient. These students are still learning and can feel embarassed about their slow progress. very happy with the tutor I have for my daughters. Ezy-math obviously employ top notch tutors. I cannot fault the girl we have, she has a natural ability for teaching and does it in a way that my daughters readily understand. Well worth the money as my daughters marks in both Mathematics and Chemistry have vastly improved.

Inside Princes HillTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Mila focused on adding and subtracting decimals as well as solving fraction problems using number lines.

For Year 9, Liam worked through quadratic equations—factoring, graphing parabolas, and translating their positions.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Ruby practised statistics by creating box plots and calculating mean and standard deviation from real data sets.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10 Maths, one student showed reluctance to write out answers for trend analysis in graph questions—"sometimes reluctant in describing the trends (which I'm sure he knows but too tired to write them down)"—leading to incomplete responses.

A Year 11 student struggled with submitting assessments on time, missing deadlines and sometimes not attempting all required tasks.

In a Year 4 session, a child forgot their textbook, which limited progress during tutoring.

Another senior student relied heavily on hints for advanced problems rather than trying multiple strategies first, often pausing whenever a new method was introduced.

Recent Achievements

One Princes Hill tutor noticed a Year 11 student who used to rush through questions is now carefully writing down every step when solving quadratics, leading to fewer errors and quicker solutions.

In a recent session with a Year 9 student, the tutor saw real improvement as she started tackling worded fraction problems independently—something she hesitated with before.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 learner who once waited for prompts has begun asking thoughtful questions about upcoming topics, showing new initiative in her learning. Last week, she asked to try material ahead of her class for the first time.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Brunswick Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Princes Hill Secondary College.
