Patience and kindness. There is no learning without failure, and as an educator, the best thing you can do is to give your students an emotionally safe environment to fail in. Hard skills: I specialise in electrical signal analysis, and have developed a strong foundation in mathematics through my academic journey. I'm experienced with many of the…

I consider the most important thing to be support. It is important to constantly communicate with students in order to manipulate your lesson plans according to their specific needs. School can be very stressful, and being able to provide support for students can definitely both make their studying easier, and also increase their efficiency. As I…

Tutors need to be calm and patient when working with the student. they need to guide the student and be able to work with the parents depeding if the student is independant or not. tutors should also be punctual to make sure that they can give the best quality lesson to the students without being rushed about another student they have…

I think helping students understand how to approach a question and learning how to discipline themselves is the most important. Constantly reminding them to complete their homework so we can go over their mistakes next time is also important in establishing a routine and will hopefully give them an incentive to do the same with school. I believe I…

The best thing that a tutor can do for a student is not to regurgitate information - that can be found by reading a book, or browsing the internet; but to inspire. I believe that a perspective can be most powerfully shared by someone who has seen and understood, who can empathize with the struggles that are necessary to get to seeing the solution…

Emotionally support them and help them achieve their goals. Ensure that they're doing well in class and achieving the highest possible results in their exams. Give them help when it's needed, even if it's outside working hours. I believe I am very patient, I try to put myself in the student's shoes to better understand their weaknesses and figure…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to help them understand the course content- so they can pass assessment- and also to help them understand other aspects of the subject they need or want to understand, either for the sake of curiosity or because they have some use for it. It is best if this understanding is of a deep…

I opine that understanding the IQ and how to upgrade it is the key responsibility of a mentor. It is also imperative that a tutor should be patient if a child is not understanding a question and try to explore new ways to make it clear. I am very loving and patient as I know kids take time to understand the key concepts. Non-judgemental is the key…

A tutor should provide a learning environment where students can build their confidence in academic performance. I think adapting to students learning style is vital to allow for the most growth in their education. Tutors are exceptionally valuable as the one on one or small class dynamics allow for the specific needs of a student to be catered for, giving their learning attention in a way that can be difficult to access within the schooling system alone.…

An exceptional tutor would ensure their students have an in-depth understanding of concepts by altering their teaching methods to best complement the student's learning capacity and to the material being taught. Although this is a personal preference, I also believe that, as a tutor, being available for students to ask questions outside of the…

The most important thing a tutor can do for their students is not only teach the content but make it relevant and fun. No one likes to slog through dry content. I have always been good with children and young adults. I have a knack of breaking down complex concepts into more bit sized pieces so they are more approachable for the students. I begin…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to ask them for constant feedback/questions. Some students are hesitant to ask questions when they are confused, which can easily lead to them not understanding content. Hence, it is important as a tutor to actively make sure that your student actually understands what you are teaching. As a…

The most important thing a tutor can do is personalise their teaching style to best suit a student. Inside PunchbowlTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Aisha worked on fraction operations including multiplication, division, and addition using step-by-step practice.

In Year 8, James focused on equations involving one-step and two-step problems as well as worded questions to strengthen algebraic understanding.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Lily revised quadratic factorisation and graphed quadratic functions in preparation for her upcoming test.

Recent Challenges

Several high school students demonstrated significant process challenges impacting their progress.

One Year 10 student repeatedly arrived without essential materials like a calculator, leading to lost time and missed practice on circle applications ("she confessed that since online learning, she has not been writing any notes down as she can read it off the slides").

In Year 11, disorganization led to incomplete homework and last-minute exam preparation—Marie received her test notification two weeks late, leaving less than a week to revise four topics.

Meanwhile, a Year 8 student's messy working out in algebra made it difficult for markers to follow her logic, which meant confusion lingered even after getting correct answers.

Another senior student neglected revision schedules entirely after exams and avoided using feedback or resources provided by tutors, which resulted in knowledge loss between sessions.

Recent Achievements

One Punchbowl tutor noticed a big shift in Marie, a Year 10 student, who previously hesitated to attempt difficult maths problems on her own—now she gives each question an honest try before asking for help and even came prepared for a timed test by revising independently.

In another session, Sharla (Year 9) showed much more openness and responsiveness during discussions, moving from quiet observation to actively engaging and tackling new algebraic techniques without prompting.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student finally started recalling the x2–x5 times tables consistently after struggling with retention for weeks and managed to reduce her time on the 12 by 12 multiplication table.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Greenacre Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Jerome's Catholic Primary School.
