Being not just a teacher, but a mentor, a model of inspiration in their life to look forward to. The importance of a good tutor in shaping up a bright student regardless of age or background can't be underestimated. Empathizing with the student, seeing from both perspectives of the study load and the curriculum, teaching in a relatable way to the…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is give students space and time to develop their own way of thinking, rather than forcing them to follow a strict curriculum or systematic approach. This helps them build independent problem-solving skills and a deeper understanding of concepts. My strength as a tutor is incorporating educational…

Learning can be spilt into 3 parts. First being simply understanding the content without worrying about exams. Second being revising and coming up questions possible from the content and getting a deeper understanding. Third is looking at the exam questions and how to form the answer to get maximum marks. I am aware of different styles of learning…

The most important thing is building understanding, not just getting to the right answer — a student should walk away knowing why something works, not just what to write down. Patience matters just as much: making sure a student never feels judged for not getting something straight away. And I think a good tutor builds confidence alongside…

The most important thing for a tutor to do to a student is to be able to connect with them on a level that allows them to understand the content. Not being able to form a connection with the student makes the learning process tough. It is important to find an approach that enables the student to succeed. As a tutor, I am able to connect with the…

I believe instilling confidence in students, and not belittling students are the most important things a tutor can do. A lot of students who struggle at Mathematics get demotivated when the work gets harder and harder. Bringing back the difficulty in questions will start building confidence in students. Constant praising when students get a…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is being prepared. I have had 1-1 Spanish tutoring in the past, and every week my tutor would arrive prepared with documents and interactive lessons, which were fundamental in enriching my learning of the subject and making the sessions more enjoyable. Additionally, the tutor needs to maintain…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to build thier confidence, to make them feel supported. Once they become comfortable, they approach more be it for doubt clarification or to better understand a problem or concept. We must also try and simplify complex concepts in a way that they can undestand. More than to help them solve…

The most important thing a tutor can do is help a student build a foundation of confidence and independent thinking. Rather than simply providing the correct answers, a tutor should guide a student through the logic of a problem so they can eventually solve it on their own. It is also vital to build a strong rapport where the student feels…

I think a tutor should have at least some level of personal connection with the student. A tutor should always motivate students to try their hardest, and also engage them into the subject as much possible. The ability to understand, to some extent at least whether the student has understood that paricular concept or…

Give the student the foundational skills to excel on the own once outside of tutoring. A good tutor will be able to get their student to a level where they feel competent to work by themselves, and know both how to solve a problem, and why we approach the problem the way we do. My strengths as a tutor is my relatability, as math didn’t come easy…

Help them understand concepts better with 1-1 interactions and increase their confidence towards not only their studies, but also towards all other milestones. I think the most important thing a tutor can do is help a student feel capable. It’s not just about explaining the material, it’s about creating an environment where they feel safe to ask questions, make mistakes, and grow. A great tutor doesn’t just help improve grades; they help build confidence, independence, and a mindset that says,…

Listen first, teach second. Understand where a student is stuck and why. Build their confidence through small wins. Make the subject relevant to their world. Inside PyrmontTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Poppy focused on dividing numbers using long division and began working with dividing decimals.

In Year 9, Tia tackled ratios and rates, practising real-world problem sets and reinforcing key methods for unit conversions.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Daniel worked through differentiation using the product rule and explored more challenging trigonometric function questions to deepen understanding ahead of assessments.

Recent Challenges

In Year 12, a student who was fully capable with application questions lost marks under exam pressure—timed conditions disrupted her usual accuracy and confidence ("under timed conditions, the pressure leads to a loss in marks").

For Year 10 algebra, skipping steps when forming equations hid small sign errors, which took extra time to find.

Meanwhile, in Year 4 maths, forgotten multiplication facts slowed down long division; revision focused only on recent topics meant earlier concepts slipped from memory.

In English (Year 9), arguments lacked focus when writing essays, leaving responses less convincing than intended.

Recent Achievements

A Pyrmont tutor noticed a Year 11 student who previously struggled with worded ratio problems now tackling them independently, even adapting quickly when questions were rephrased—a big shift from needing step-by-step prompts.

In a recent session, a Year 8 student who had been hesitant to ask questions started speaking up whenever unsure and volunteered to solve practice sums on the whiteboard without prompting.

Meanwhile, a primary schooler worked through all her mensuration formula problems within the set time for the first time after having trouble finishing before; she finished strong by checking her answers herself and correcting two small errors without help.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Ultimo Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Sydney Secondary College Blackwattle Bay Campus.
