Supporting the student to the best of their abilities means that the student will have more assistance for their tutors to achieve their goals. And we as tutors must believe in the abilities…

The most vital job of a a tutor is to provide enough confidence to the students so that They can have believe in themselves to solve any numerical problems or to understand any other subjects. For me, the two things that aided me most when I was being tutored in highschool were practice questions given to me by tutors and when these tutors took their time to really deconstruct these concepts until I fully understood them. My biggest strength is patience. Sometimes it takes students a long time to begin to understand certain concepts and…

According to my experience of tutoring high school students, the biggest challenge that students could face is the psychology in their mind which tells them they are not capable of doing that particular subject. As a tutor, I am highly aware that giving moral support is one of the most crucial things in tutoring. Another important thing would be…

A tutor must listen to their students and understand that each child is unique and has different learning rates. The tutor must be patient with the child and create strategies for efficient learning. I think the most important thing a tutor can do is make a student feel understood and supported, not judged. Learning can be really challenging, especially when you’re already dealing with pressure, self doubt, or even language barriers. In the end, what matters most is that a tutor helps a student find confidence in their own ability to learn…

In my humble opinion, I believe that ACTIVE LISTENING is the most important quality that good tutors must possess. - Good tutors must recognise that students generally have an idea of the topic at hand. Instead of simply continuing to "teach" it is vital that tutors ask students of their understanding of the topic so that gaps in knowledge can…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to provide support and help them develop independence in their learning. It is also important to help students enjoy learning and develop the resilience to…

Inside RivertonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Lara worked on graphing linear equations, finding gradients from tables and coordinates, and using the midpoint formula.

In Year 9, Ethan practised solving simultaneous equations by both substitution and elimination, as well as tackling worded problems that required forming and rearranging algebraic expressions.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Mia focused on expanding and factorising quadratic equations, then used the quadratic formula to solve for unknowns in standard form.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student repeatedly skipped writing out full algebraic steps when rearranging trigonometric ratios, leading to confusion between numerators and denominators—"I had to keep reminding her to write out the whole equation before she tried to solve."

In Year 9 statistics, another found it difficult to organise data in Excel, losing time hunting for functions rather than analysing results.

A Year 8 learner often left worded questions incomplete, misreading which triangle side was required, then hesitated to use provided formula sheets.

After setbacks with negative numbers in simultaneous equations (Year 11), calculator reliance increased and confidence dropped mid-task.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Riverton noticed a Year 10 student who previously hesitated to attempt algebraic questions now starts each one independently, writing out every step before asking for feedback.

In a recent high school session, another student who struggled with interpreting linear graphs was able to accurately draw lines from equations and explain the meaning of slope and intercept without prompts.

Meanwhile, a Year 6 student who used to guess at place value questions has begun talking through her reasoning out loud, using number tables confidently to find answers.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Riverton Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Riverton Primary School.
