The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make the student love a subject because if this happens, the improvement will follow mechanically. A tutor should be able to make the student challenge himself and want to improve for his own sake. The tutor must also make sure that the morale of the student remains high as he should…

Active listening. I believe this is the most important trait and thing a tutor can do for a student. This is because our role is to educate and a way of guiding students to take in information in the best or most efficient way, and part of that is listening actively to what the student wants out of tutoring sessions and adjusting however possible…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can and should do for a student is to be adaptable to their circumstances and learning style. Each student is different, and a tutor should be ready to change their teaching style to suit the students needs to facilitate the student's development. This gives the student the best chance to succeed. I…

To let the student understand the mechanism or logic behind the problem, not simply solving the question he/she is facing. To be able to teach the ability of solving problems, not merely providing solutions to the questions. Once as a bilingual international student, I was not only once the role or student and tutor. I started learning English at…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to foster an enjoyment of the subject. It is incredible how much one good teacher can completely change your perception of a subject. Inspiration and encouragement are key. In today's world, it is very easy to get cooped up in the competition to get the highest grades, and a lot of students lose their way in that race and end up not reaping the benefits of knowledge. Many students study for grades and certificates and their knowledge is unable to transition into practical…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is to teach students good learning methods and improve their self-study ability, which makes them benefit for life. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be able to figure out the learning style that suits each student best and cater their lesson to that learning style in order for the student to get the most of each lesson. This is definitely easier said than done, and as a result it also takes patience on behalf of the tutor to create…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is help them to feel confident with the task in front of them. An effective tutor will break down the concept, slowly explaining this to the student, making sure they are following each step along the way. Once the student has grasped the concept and feel confident with it, they will be…

In my opinion it would be to use examples applicable to the student and help them understand the concept instead of having them memorize the book for the exam. When I was in year 4 I was quite weak in my mathematics, however by year 12 I was the strongest student in my high school getting a number of prizes. This improvement was enabled by me…

Inside RosannaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Charlie focused on adding and subtracting fractions and prepared for an upcoming fractions test using targeted practice.

In Year 8, Emily worked through number patterns, including identifying rules and solving pattern problems involving multiplication and substitution.

For Year 11, Alex tackled least squares regression lines in statistics and reinforced understanding of data transformation concepts by working through example questions together.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 mathematics, one student regularly forgot to bring her calculator and books, which meant she lost valuable practice time in class and sometimes couldn't complete set tasks.

A Year 10 learner struggled with setting out answers clearly—her algebra steps were hard to follow, as a tutor noted: "She skipped showing working out, which hid errors."

Meanwhile, a senior student missed a lesson but did not seek help afterwards, so gaps remained before the next topic began.

In each case, organization or avoidance of visible working led to extra confusion or slower progress during lessons.

Recent Achievements

One Rosanna tutor noted a big shift in a Year 10 student who, after previously hesitating to speak up, now regularly asks for help when confused and finishes most questions without prompting.

In a senior session, Sarah from Year 12 pushed ahead of her class by tackling exam-style matrices problems—she actively asked detailed questions to clarify tricky points, something she rarely did before.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student surprised her tutor by spotting number patterns independently; just weeks ago she needed step-by-step guidance for each problem but now often works through the sequences independently.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Rosanna Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Rosanna Primary School.
