The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is highlight their strengths as a learner. I don't want students to think they need a tutor because they need help and feel badly about their current academic performance. I want students to have control over their learning when it comes to choices, activities, and material. Students should…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is create a space where the student feels supported and understood. Learning only happens when a student feels comfortable enough to say they’re confused, so building trust is essential. Another key responsibility is clarity breaking concepts down into simple, manageable steps and adapting…

I try my best to create a safe, supportive environment where students feel encouraged to ask questions, make mistakes, and grow. Confidence is key to overcoming challenges and taking ownership of learning, and it requires patience and understanding from the tutor. It's always important to understand and relate to the student, may it be sports,…

What do you consider to be the most important things a tutor can do for a student? Making sure that all of my student's questions are answered before the end of the lesson is one of the most important things in tutoring in my opinion. Asking question is the best way of learning and therefore answering question is the best way of teaching.…

It is to understand that the students are human as well, we all make mistakes. By being patient and understanding the issues impacting their learning, we can further help them to achieve their goals. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is being patient and slowly explaining concepts in an easier way in order to be able to fully explain concepts that can be easily understood. The strengths as a tutor are my social skills, my patience, and my ability to break down concepts and explain it in an easier way. This means that I am…

I believe that a tutors role extends beyond just teaching; they are trusted. Receiving tutoring for scholarship subjects for myself in high school, what was my impactful was tutors providing a safe space for open discussion and drawing insights from their learning journeys. As a result, I felt a genuine connection which transformed my tutors from…

I strongly believe that building a student's confidence is a key first step. Ensuring that they can see their progress, which in turn makes them eager to learn more. I think it is important to break down problems into steps that feel achievable, and ensuring every session ends with them feeling more capable than when it started. I believe that…

Obviously, an important thing that a tutor can provide to their students is to support them academically. A tutor should be articulate about their workings, and master a great command over the topic. However, a tutor should also act as a mental support. They should act as an intermediary and acts as additional help if their students have…

A tutor should be able to resonate and communicate well with a student firstly. Another important factor is to keep patience and listen to what the students have to say and not rush them into understanding different concepts. First and foremost, helping them score well for the examinations they are going to sit for. However, along the way there, I think it's important for a tutor to help them find their own reason on why they want to do well, their own unique strengths and learning styles, guide them on how to access credible resources help them develop their own voice…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is allow the student to see that they are so much more than their grades, but also giving them the tools they need to succeed academically, because at the end of the day, their grades will play a big part in the options they will have for future studies. I feel my biggest strength would be my…

A tutor can clearly identify the strengths and weaknesses of students and guide them accordingly. He should focus on the strengths and minimise their weaknesses. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to build their confidence in being able to attempt completely unfamiliar problems. Inside RoseberyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Abby focused on measurement, practising area of circles and surface area of solids through school-aligned worksheets.

For Year 10, Sunny worked on graphing functions and was introduced to trigonometry, including proving problems with algebraic exercises.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Nathan revised quadratic equations using the discriminant (delta method) and tackled transformation of parabolas by finding intersections between parabolas and lines.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Mathematics, a student sometimes avoided showing working for absolute value problems with multiple absolute signs; as one tutor noted, "she needed help organizing her steps in proving exercises to avoid confusion and hidden errors."

Meanwhile, a Year 9 English learner struggled to expand ideas clearly in creative writing—rushed sentence structure left her responses feeling disjointed under timed conditions.

In Year 7 Maths, careless sample space identification affected conditional probability questions: "sometimes got the sample space wrong," observed the tutor, leading to incorrect answers on card deck tasks. After setbacks, visible frustration lingered during practice sessions.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Rosebery noticed Sunny, a high school student, now sketches function graphs independently—last term she needed constant prompting for each step.

Another Year 10 student, Ismail, has started completing short algebra quizzes within the set time and gets most answers correct; previously he would leave questions unfinished or need hints to continue.

In a recent session with a younger student, their approach to fractions changed: instead of guessing, they worked through improper-to-mixed conversions out loud and checked their own steps before moving on. The session finished with them tackling harder fraction problems without hesitation.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Mascot Library (incl. the George Hanna Memorial Museum)—or at your child's school (with permission), like Gardeners Road Public School.
