Believing in the students is the most important thing an english tutor can do for their student. Some students may not believe in themselves and will need an extra boost or encouragement to believe they can do it as every student has the potential to do well. It all depends in the amount of motivation they have and how willing they are to put in…

Being understanding, confident and respectful are key aspects in an english tutor- student relationship. These three qualities ensure the reliability and integrity of the tutor. I also believe that showing my students I'm not always right is a good skill to teach (mostly these mistakes are unintentional). It is the manner in which one amends one's…

The most important thing is to build strong, personal relationships with my students. Personal relationships are foundational to student success -- the more connected a student feels, the more the tutor creates trust and respect, essential ingredients for students to learn well. When listening and spending time building a relationship with the…

It is being able to relate to students who struggle and find a way that works for them, not necessarily a way that only works for me. In my experience, a student needs an english tutor willing to adapt to their needs. A tutor can always keep track of their student's progress and help them achieve their goals. We are helping students achieve their…

The most important thing is to create optimal learning environments where students feel supported and excited to learn. Learning is never easy- but I am motivated to make it as comfortable as possible. This means that students feel safe to make mistakes, learn from them, and ask questions. Some of the things I consider to be most important when tutoring are listening to the student to really understand what they are finding difficult, encouraging the student to persevere and not give up on themselves, and most importantly, finding a range of methods and techniques to use when tutoring. As an english tutor, it is crucial to make sure a student is able to independently and confidently apply a concept. The most important thing a tutor can do is adjust their teaching methods and style based on each student. Teaching with only one style and using the same methods for everyone won't work, and if you can't adjust, your sessions becomes very robotic and boring. Inside SandhurstTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 11 student Alex explored polynomial and composite functions, then practised differentiation techniques in the context of function analysis.

In Year 10, Sam focused on applying the sine and cosine rules to solve non-right-angled triangle problems and worked through Pythagoras' theorem in three dimensions using diagrams.

Meanwhile, Year 8 student Mia revised highest common factors and lowest common multiples before tackling prime factorisation using factor trees.

Recent Challenges

Often forgetting to bring their calculator and notes home left the Year 11 student unable to complete homework or revise formulas for chemistry and physics.

In Year 9, a tutor noted that "she needs to be clearer when writing down the workings so that she'll be able to check back on her steps later," especially in algebra tasks—unclear layout made it difficult to catch errors.

One senior student hesitated to persist with challenging questions, sometimes giving up too quickly during complex trigonometry revision; this led to unfinished problems and frustration building mid-session.

Recent Achievements

One Sandhurst tutor noticed a Year 10 student who used to quietly guess when stuck on equations now actively asks for help, then applies new strategies straight away—last week she solved transposition problems independently for the first time.

In a recent high school chemistry session, another student who struggled with oxidation numbers started confidently assigning them without prompts and even checked her answers using textbook examples.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who often mixed up multiplication facts was able to work through all seven times tables in one go, pausing only once to self-correct before moving on.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Carrum Downs Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Carrum Downs Secondary College.
