One of the most important things a tutor can do is help students see the significance and practicality of the concepts they are learning. Rather than just teaching for the sake of memorizing, a great tutor bridges the gap between theory and real world application, allowing students to appreciate the beauty of a subject. Because only when students…

Being a teacher, it's his/her duty to make the student understand any concept accurately with an ease and with great patience. It is not right to shout or get angry on any person if he or she is not able to do any thing, all you need is some time and practice and also some tricks to solve any problem. I am a very patient person and work with full…

The most important thing that tutors should and can do for a student is to assess their current level, create a goal and guide them towards that level. Having patience while students work through and learn, as well as challenging them with new questions are an important role for tutors. I think my strengths as a tutor is patience and gentleness so…

To prepare for class and constantly check up on their progress. Students often need help outside of class, which lots of tutors do not provide. I am always accessible outside of class hours, ensuring students get help whenever they need it. Another important thing is to motivate the student. I believe tutoring helps students develop a genuine love for learning. There are 2 characteristics a tutor needs to achieve this. Firstly, the tutor should have an open and friendly personality. Learning is inherently effortful, and having someone friendly to guide the process makes it more enjoyable and productive. Additionally, tutors need to…

Support them. Sometimes students just need that boost of confidence and support to understand. Frustration in their own learning can often end up being the reason why a concept is not being understood. I was an inclusion support assistant at a primary school, working with various kids with learning difficulties and disabilities. This has given me…

As a tutor, the most valuable thing we can do is to inspire our student to be more confident in their abilities. We must help students build their own critical thinking and problem solving skills for their long-term success. I believe fostering an encouraging space that prioritizes learning over being right or wrong is best for this. My strength…

I would like to answer this question from the student’s point of view. It’s not important for the tutor to know each and everything but what is important is that if the student is unable to understand a topic and the tutor is also not aware of it, it’s his/her responsibility to give that student the assurance that he/she will try to solve it…

Having both been the tutee and the tutor, I believe that it is imperative that a tutor is supportive of the student and caters their teaching to the student's specific needs. A tutor should be able to and simplify a particular concept making it easier for a student to understand. Beyond the learning of a specific subject, which may appear to be the main goal of tutoring to some, the most important things I believe a tutor can do for a student is to offer an enjoyable experience of learning. The school system can be difficult and it can be easy for students to lose motivation and interest in learning. A tutor can provide…

Inside SherwoodTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Oscar worked on recognising and using homophones versus homographs, and improved reading comprehension skills by analysing a historical text.

Year 8 student Jakob focused on writing body paragraphs for his English speech, including developing topic sentences and refining paragraph structure.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student explored percentages, fractions, and decimals—particularly finding the percentage of a whole number both directly and in reverse—while practising careful reading of multi-step maths questions.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10 Maths, one student left several homework tasks incomplete and struggled to recall material from the previous week, making it difficult to build on new concepts. "She could have some specific questions she had trouble with throughout the previous week ready, if she wanted to," a tutor observed.

Meanwhile, a Year 8 student often guessed answers in problem-solving rather than writing out logical steps—this led to repeated mistakes in algebra that weren't spotted until feedback was given.

Another senior student forgot key materials for lessons and did not always bring completed assignments for review, slowing progress on targeted skills.

Recent Achievements

One Sherwood tutor noticed a big shift in Year 10 student Jakob, who started openly discussing essay feedback and even suggested his own improvements—whereas he used to just listen quietly.

In a recent session, Ethan (Year 7) completed all his homework before the lesson and was able to correct mistakes in his story draft on his own, instead of waiting for prompts.

Meanwhile, Isabelle in Year 4 has become much more focused during maths lessons; she now confidently explains her jump and split strategies out loud and even taught them back to the tutor last week.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Corinda Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Sherwood State School.
