I am confident that an ability to find a right way to deliver an imformation is the best thing a true tutor can do. It is always important to remember that every student is different and therefore a study approach has to be different as well. As I tutor, I am an excellent communicator, which allows me to find a right way to educate other students…

According to me available for the student at the time of need that is more important and identifying exactly where the student get stuck or need help is what makes an efficient tutor. Explanation capacity and clarity of specific topics in subject about basics and pointing it in student's mind is the best strength that I have so far. Along with it…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be easily available to them. Often times a student may wish to clarify a quick concept or question outside of tutor times for homework or other purposes. By being easily available to the student, a tutor can spare a few minutes of their day to support and promote the student's learning.…

This way a tutor can keep professionalism and at he same time help a student not only understand content but fall in love with the content. I would have to say the tutor would need to be driven. If the tutor doesn’t have that drive how will their student show any motivation or show the knowledge they’ve gained I think I’m quite patient. Patience is always ideal when tutoring as something cannot always be fully understood. Additionally I have been told I’m very understanding…

To recognise the student's limits, and to help them reach beyond them. A tutor should set realistic goals for students to help them stay motivated and to make progress in their learning, however, they should also encourage students to achieve higher through effective communication and tutoring support. As the student's needs should be a tutor's…

I think the purpose of a tutor is to complement and supplement the school classroom learning to ensure that the student has a good understanding of the subject's content, but ultimately a good tutor will develop a student's independent learning ability, and only fill in gaps in a student's knowledge when required. A tutor should guide a student…

To be able to enable to student to think, and answer hard questions when all else has failed. A tutor shouldn't teach a student but rather guide them to asking the right questions and figuring out the right paths to take in order to get the information that they need. Being supportive and patient because it can be difficult for a tutor to see how hard the high school level maths can be for the student. Tutors need to remember how they did when they did the same maths years ago for their HSC/school and how difficult it was back then as opposed to how simple it seems now. As a maths tutor, I understand how…

Being able to explain concepts well to a student is arguably the most important thing. The best tutors are those who can explain and teach challenging ideas with relative ease in a short period of time because they have such good interpersonal skills. I believe my greatest strength is personal interaction with the student, and the ability to…

Since students most commonly get tutoring as they do not understand the approach taken by their teacher to the subject, I believe the most important thing is to relate to the student, and see the problem from their perspective. This leads to the ability to create personalised approaches to the theories presented in class, and allow the student to…

The most important thing a tutor can do is to inspire passion; a person who is sincerely interested in a subject and has a drive to continue delving into it will naturally go much further and achieve much higher then an unmotivated genius no matter the intellect as they will enjoy the entire journey of learning and not just focus on the results. Inside SherwoodTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Oscar worked on recognising and using homophones versus homographs, and improved reading comprehension skills by analysing a historical text.

Year 8 student Jakob focused on writing body paragraphs for his English speech, including developing topic sentences and refining paragraph structure.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student explored percentages, fractions, and decimals—particularly finding the percentage of a whole number both directly and in reverse—while practising careful reading of multi-step maths questions.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10 Maths, one student left several homework tasks incomplete and struggled to recall material from the previous week, making it difficult to build on new concepts. "She could have some specific questions she had trouble with throughout the previous week ready, if she wanted to," a tutor observed.

Meanwhile, a Year 8 student often guessed answers in problem-solving rather than writing out logical steps—this led to repeated mistakes in algebra that weren't spotted until feedback was given.

Another senior student forgot key materials for lessons and did not always bring completed assignments for review, slowing progress on targeted skills.

Recent Achievements

One Sherwood tutor noticed a big shift in Year 10 student Jakob, who started openly discussing essay feedback and even suggested his own improvements—whereas he used to just listen quietly.

In a recent session, Ethan (Year 7) completed all his homework before the lesson and was able to correct mistakes in his story draft on his own, instead of waiting for prompts.

Meanwhile, Isabelle in Year 4 has become much more focused during maths lessons; she now confidently explains her jump and split strategies out loud and even taught them back to the tutor last week.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Corinda Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Sherwood State School.
