Listen. I find that listening to why the student might be struggling or what they have missed is the first and most important step to helping a student. Secondly a tutor should be able to adapt. Wether that be to a different learning style or struggle and through tutoring be able to help them to understand how to study and progress in their…

I believe that tutors and teachers alike are not endless sources of book knowledge but rather a librarian who must guide students to discover, interpret and apply knowledge for themselves. Thus, it is crucial that a tutor forms a strong relationship with its students to create an environment where student learning is maximised. Further, in…

I believe that the most important consideration when tutoring is to establish a good relationship with the students. Education involves more than just sitting through and able to understand the lessons. Building a good connection will allow the tutor to give the students a more enjoyable and engaging lesson. After establishing a good…

I think one of the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to help the student not just to learn the particular concept in a subject but most importantly to help the student develop that love for learning, that learning is something that is fun. I think one of my strength as a tutor is my patience and understanding that each student…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is not only create well-structured learning plans, but also execute them according to different students' needs. By understanding the pace and most effective learning methods for students, whilst fostering a supportive learning environment where they are encouraged to ask questions, tutors can…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is allow them to learn. I have seen cases where tutors sit there and answer the student once they get stuck, which I consider detrimental to the child's learning. I recognize the importance of facilitating learning by guiding students rather than just answering their work for them. When I was…

Tutors need to understand the question asked by students before they teach the solution to students. After solving the problems, it is important to analyse the problems that students have. Students might be unclear about one basic theory, resulting in the incapability of solving extended questions. Therefore, tutors should be able to point out the…

Change in accordance to what a student expresses. No one likes to be feel or be stated as dumb, a tutor should be a guide more than an instructor. He/ she should be a friend who shares their knowledge while solving problems together rather than being a standard commercial teacher. Personalization, Adaptation, Patience, Practical…

Every student is different and it is the tutors' responsibility to recognize this and adhere to students learning patterns. I believe a tutor should not only teach students exam oriented problem solving skills but also help them build positive learning mindsets. I once struggled with science subjects, so I understand how teenage troubles and academic setbacks can distract students. I can help them allocate energy reasonably between study and daily life, and guide them…

Since different students, all have their own way of learning. Therefore I think it is important for tutors to know the characteristics of a students' learning through the first or second classes, then tutors should come up with an appropriate study plan for students' further studies. Also, it is necessary to build relationships with students.…

I believe the key traits in tutoring children are to always have a calm demeanor and also be open-minded about new ideas and methods to conduct a lesson. I think a tutor needs to understand the type of learner the student is first and foremost, as not everyone learns the same way. Effective learning can only happen when effective teaching takes place. Inside South TurramurraTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Sam worked through probability, focusing on basic chance experiments and interpreting results from tables.

In Year 10, Grace practised trigonometric graph sketching and applied the binomial theorem to expansion problems using structured examples.

For Year 12, Daniel revised calculus applications such as differentiation of exponentials and tackled financial maths questions involving compound interest, reviewing past paper questions for exam preparation.

Recent Challenges

Several process habits stood out across year levels.

In Year 11 calculus, one student often left revision exercises incomplete and didn't revisit assigned practice, making it hard to retain differentiation methods—"he is also not going back and doing revision exercises that are assigned to him."

Another, working on advanced algebra in Year 10, regularly struggled to start multi-step problems without hints, which slowed progress on unfamiliar application questions.

During a Year 12 statistics lesson, skipping written steps in probability led to errors with CDF and PDF relationships; this meant extra time was spent retracing calculations instead of tackling new material.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in South Turramurra noticed that one Year 12 student, after previously hesitating to ask for clarification, now regularly speaks up when stuck on tricky calculus questions and seeks feedback to double-check his approach.

Another high schooler has shifted from needing step-by-step guidance in coordinate geometry to tackling most problems independently and even choosing harder challenge questions during lessons.

Meanwhile, a younger student recently began outlining proofs unaided in class—something he'd struggled with just a week before—and completed the session by successfully presenting his reasoning without prompts.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Turramurra Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Turramurra Public School.
