The most important thing a tutor can do is build a strong base of knowledge for the students. A base of knowledge is very important as they proceed through their studies in the future, and so a tutor's job is to make sure that they understand the knowledge given now, so that they can use it for future studies I have experience working with…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is help students become an independent learners. I should teach students how to think, rather than just telling the answers I believe my greatest strength as a tutor is my ability to explain complex concepts in a simple and engaging way. Every student learns differently and I adapt my teaching…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is to help the student gain confidence in not just what they are studying or struggling with, but to have it inherently. I believe if they have innate confidence, they can strive not just academically, but also as a person. As someone who has also struggled and been tutored, this experience has…

I always believe. Such a wide and open sentence, and again, it is a cliche sentence but it is my utmost sincere value that I sternly hold on to. Never give any student a label. I have had many individuals whisper to me about another's "hopeless" academic ability or their "stubbornness" and "ignorance." I always believe that they can do it. I…

I believe that a tutor is there to support their students. To help them improve not only in the classroom and on tests, but to see the importance of what they study and how it relates to their lives and their future. I believe that a tutor is an extra support for a student, someone that they can rely on, other than their teachers and peers, for…

Instilling confidence is the most important thing I could do as a tutor for my student. Because my end goal is for them to believe in their ability to learn new material even without my guidance. Once your student feels confident, they tend to perform holistically better. Even in subjects they were already doing well in to begin with. My ability…

Inside SouthbankTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student Nathan focused on NAPLAN-style questions involving ratio and decimals, as well as strategies for tackling worded fractions problems.

In Year 11, Maya revised specialist mathematics topics such as stationary points and rates of change using practice SAC questions, alongside a review of coordinate geometry and integration by substitution.

For Year 12, Jack worked through complex numbers in both polar and arithmetic forms and practiced exam-style questions covering trigonometric proofs and compound angle identities.

Recent Challenges

During recent sessions, a Year 9 student worked confidently with algebra but "the algebra gets confusing at times"—particularly when manipulating fractions—making test questions harder to tackle under time pressure.

In Year 11 Chemistry, the challenge was recalling key information and applying molar ratios in multi-step pH problems; summarizing details from long worded questions was slow.

One Year 7 session highlighted that turning word problems into equations still feels unfamiliar: starting these questions independently takes extra effort.

When reviewing tests, reading each question carefully mattered—missing this step meant some errors repeated, even after feedback was given.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Southbank noticed Alec, a Year 10 student, now shows more interest during sessions and has started asking questions about tricky topics instead of staying quiet—something he avoided before.

In another session, a senior student preparing for exams independently worked through curve sketching problems and used a stepwise approach to solve them, which had been a stumbling block just weeks earlier.

Meanwhile, a Year 6 learner who previously rushed maths tests began pacing himself better; last lesson he finished all his questions with time left to review answers on his own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Southbank Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Victorian College Of The Arts Secondary School.
