The tutor must identify the student’s learning gaps, explain concepts clearly and provide appropriate practice and feedback. It is also important to develop a supportive environment where students feel comfortable to ask questions, to make mistakes, and to slowly become independent and confident learners. My strengths are my strong knowledge of…

I believe that the most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is to allow the student to feel free to ask questions and to query explanations. This way, it allows for me to answer their initial query as well as giving me the opportunity to proactively infer other areas that they may not completely understand. My strengths are centred…

Building confidence of the student is the most important thing a tutor can do for a student. Grades will automatically improve if the student's confidence level goes up. Along, with confidence passion and love for the subject is another major factor that affects students grades. As long as you love the subject, you are willing to work hard to…

Listening to their questions, as many children are too scared to ask questions in class, and I hope to provide them a safe space for this. I also think it's important to be flexible, to work with what the kids need. Especially with younger children, who may not necessarily know what exactly they're struggling with. - Patience - Good understanding…

Provide support to students in both the academic and mental difficulties they might be going through. Often as a tutor you must recognise that students who get tutoring need further help than what is being given and may have academic insecurity, so it is our role to help them improve on this and gain confidence in their learning, with hopes that…

I think the most important thing is to inspire students to learn more and improve in their own respective ways, as it is crucial that we teach them methods of how to learn instead of just force-feeding knowledge. Tutors should teach strategies that are easily implementable for a variety of situations so that students can confidently adapt their…

A tutor, morally, can pave a path to right mindset for a student and impart knowledge not just of textbooks but moral education too . The biggest part of tutoring is adjusting to the various communication styles of each student, when students rely on visuals to understand a topic, the tutor needs to present graphs or sketches to exemplify formulas in a more visual manner when students prefer to learn using examples the topic needs to be translated into more tangible manners.…

A tutor can make a student love the subject he/she hates. The most important thing for a tutor is to understand the student, his/her interests, aptitude, and what he/she is inclined towards. I believe that creating open communication is a very important part of teaching. I consider the best way to connect with students is to create a positive learning environment and encourage interaction and discussion. Inside SpenceTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Sam focused on representing numbers and practiced addition and subtraction strategies, including the compensation method, to build confidence with basic operations.

In Year 8, Caledon worked on factorising quadratic expressions using the PSN method and revisited how to solve equations in standard form (mx+c), discussing the meaning of gradient and intercepts.

Meanwhile, Anise in Year 12 tackled applying the chain rule to differentiate compound functions and explored algebraic manipulation through challenging extension questions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student repeatedly forgot to complete assigned homework, which meant less time spent consolidating key methods between lessons; as one tutor noted, "he hadn't finished the homework assigned last week."

In Year 9 maths, another student's written work became hard to follow when mathematical grammar—such as correct use of the equals sign—was inconsistent.

During a Year 3 English task, difficulty proofreading led to missed capitalisation errors and confusion over basic grammar.

Without clear lesson planning in a recent session, learning darted between topics, leaving gaps unaddressed and making it harder for students to build on prior knowledge.

Recent Achievements

One Spence tutor noticed a high school student, Caledon, who used to hesitate with multi-step algebra problems now solving several on his own without needing hints—last week he finished his set entirely unaided.

Another secondary student, Anise, previously unsure about logarithms, was able to correctly choose and apply the right log law even in fully abstract variable questions.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who had avoided reading aloud began volunteering to read passages and now checks her answers by referencing the book independently after each comprehension question.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Belconnen Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Mount Rogers Primary School.
