The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to ignite a passion and 'vision' for learning. Our current society tends to view academia as a means to an end as opposed to an ends in itself, and if a tutor awakens a love for the subject in his student, then they have succeeded. By doing so, the student becomes more engaged and receptive…

As a tutor I believe that the most important thing is to be able to reach out for me to assist them with their works because an immediate feedback can make a difference in the performance. Providing extra material for students are also a very essential part of tutoring as it enables student to expand their knowledge and allows them to perform…

Being willing to help, but also acknowledge the rare instances where a tutor may be unable to help to a confident level. I believe it is better to acknowledge if you do not know something rather than pretend you do and risk teaching something that is incorrect. When this problem is encountered, however, it is up to the tutor to rectify this by…

For the majority of students I have met, a large proportion approach their studies disinterested. Thus, the tutor’s most crucial responsibility is not only to effectively convey the subject matter, it is to do it in a way which sparks engagement. This extends further for theoretical subjects such as chemistry, where the tutor assumes a greater…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is make the subject material engaging, fun and captivating. In my opinion, a student can only learn and develop if they choose to do so, regardless of the ability or experience of the tutor or student. Thus, by making the subject in question seem alive through enthusiasm and engagement, the student…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to help them build small skills which they are able to use in their lives. For example, helping a student open up means that they have developed that skill which will help them to open up to their teachers perhaps at school etc. I believe that the role of a teacher is to help students grow…

As all students would have different levels of understanding, the most important thing a tutor can do is to take the time to devise individual learning plans for the students, plans which suit the individual's learning style and would be most effective in seeing them reach their full intellectual capacity. Punctuality and reliability are also…

A tutor is someone that helps students with their academic studies so that they get a better understanding of the subject .So for example, for biology subject ,a tutor needs to explain the concept rather then helping them reciting the subject without understanding. I think as a tutor, support is the most important thing we can do to students. This can be educational support, but also when a student is struggling emotionally or finding it challenging to navigate through work, I think as tutors we should also help the student in need. Obviously, we are not responsible for every burden the student have, but I…

It is vital, especially in year 12, for a tutor to unlock a student's full potential in a certain subject, in order to ensure that they perform confidently in their exams, fully knowing that they are doing the best that they can, and have utilized all the available resources. Dedication to a student i.e. going above and beyond to cater to a…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is give them the confidence they need to sit an exam and believe that they have the skills required to answer the questions in front of them. I believe a tutor should be a mentor, someone the student can relate to and feel comfortable expressing their problems to, but should also be assertive and draw the line between being professional and being a friend. Inside Springvale SouthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Alice focused on adding and subtracting fractions, including work with equivalent fractions and practical examples.

For Year 8, Daniel practised solving linear equations and explored expanding and factorising algebraic expressions using step-by-step worked solutions.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Sarah tackled advanced algebra topics such as manipulating complex algebraic fractions and applied her understanding to solve equations with variables on both sides.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student struggled to show working in algebra and worded questions; as a tutor noted, "he got the answer but skipped showing steps," making it hard to trace logic and catch errors.

In Year 11 maths, incomplete homework meant revision time was spent clarifying missed concepts rather than advancing to new material.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner often left multiplication tables unpracticed at home—when asked for 6x or 7x facts, she hesitated.

During a senior timed test, pressure led to skipped checks and repeated careless mistakes on linear equations, leaving marks lost despite knowing the method.

Recent Achievements

A Springvale South tutor recently saw a Year 9 student, Mitchell, shift from hesitating on algebra to confidently factorising expressions after making mental notes from worked examples and actively using them to avoid previous mistakes.

In a senior session, another student who used to rush through questions without checking now deliberately double-checks each step in solving circular functions, which led to her correctly finding exact values for the first time.

Meanwhile, in primary years, Florian—who was initially quiet and unsure—has started talking through his addition problems out loud and back-checking answers independently before moving on.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Dingley Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Athol Road Primary School.
