The most important thing as a tutor is to understand the students way of thinking and then helping the student adapt to certain techniques that can improve his/her grasping skills. It is important to be empathetic towards students. I think I am able to devise certain techniques for the students to help them learn better and faster. I am able to…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student would be to be able to have the student reach their goals in their school work, tests and grades. I am great at explaining things in details. For example, if I were to be tutoring maths, instead of only showing answers, I would explain the steps to the answer and better explain concepts to help…

To help them in all the possible ways so that they are confident that they can do it. Also, try to make them think out of the box so that they can actually help themselves as well. I am always ready to help and make sure that people are understanding what needs to be done. Also, I am very patient and I can explain the same thing over and over…

Firstly, a tutor needs to spot what students are in need and look for the best solution for them. For example, students may not be interested in some topics and perform badly, tutor should notice it is not about the ability of the students but the motivation. To solve this problem, tutor should think of planning the lesson in a fun…

In my opinion, the most critical responsibility of a tutor is not during the teaching phase, but in the phase that comes after the lesson. After learning the theory, the student will begin practising problems related to the topic and it is during this period, that most of the learning takes place. Hence, it is important for tutors to be there to…

The most important thing is to be flexible and non-judgemental. You have to be open to different challenges that the student may be facing beyond the subject. Each student is different and has different ways to learn and as such your teaching method should reflect this. I think my strengths are that I am patient but firm when teaching my students.…

A tutor should recognise a person's academic abilities and enable them to succeed in achieving their best correspondingly. They are also responsible for suggesting possible ways to improve the person's study methods (e.g. visual learning, songs, or writing). I'm confident in my communication so i can explain detail and concepts in a digestible…

Most of these students who are being tutored most likely are struggling with the subject/s they are being tutored in. From previous experience, I've observed students do better in subjects they enjoy learning about. Hence I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is help them find aspects of the subject which they enjoy and…

If students have difficulties in learning, it is important to keep in contact and assist students to cope their stress. A tutor or a teacher builds his student's knowledge, clears any misconceptions if he have, clears their sight between right and wrong behaviors, help them to achieve their learning goals and to decide what they want to be in future. I think that being patient and empathetic are two of the most important things a tutor can do for a student. Listening empathetically to a student can help a tutor to understand the way that the student thinks. In turn, the student feels understood and real improvements can be made. Patience is important for many reasons in tutoring. In my…

Melanie, St Kilda

Inside St KildaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 12 student Matthew focused on complex numbers—proving properties using geometric arguments—and also tackled advanced trial paper questions involving polynomials and mathematical induction.

Year 11 student Amisha worked through the quantum mechanical nature of atoms, applying the Rydberg equation to electron transitions, and practised solving problems on electromagnetic induction.

Meanwhile, Year 10 Will developed essay writing skills by planning comparative responses for Tracks and Into the Wild, with particular attention to analysing language use and connecting key themes such as individualism and materialism.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Maths, a student often skipped showing full working in interest and credit card problems, which made it hard to catch repeated calculation errors; as noted, "small details were missed due to the habit of skimming over the question and jumping straight to the formula."

In senior English, incomplete homework and weak communication about missing work became an issue—one week, no prior notice was given that set tasks hadn't been attempted.

Exam responses also suffered from minimal essay planning, leading to answers drifting off-topic.

In Extension Maths, forgetting previous feedback meant similar mistakes kept resurfacing during timed proof questions.

Recent Achievements

One St Kilda tutor noticed that Will, a Year 12 English student, has begun to independently spot and explain his own writing errors—something he previously struggled with—and now takes initiative to backcheck his essays before submitting.

In another recent high school session, Amisha made a breakthrough in physics by correctly solving a projectile motion problem using methods she'd found confusing just weeks ago, and her improved test score reflected the shift.

Meanwhile, a younger student showed new engagement by describing themes for class novels out loud after previously being hesitant to share ideas during lessons.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as St Kilda Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Yesodei HaTorah College.
