The essential characteristic of a tutor is the way to deliver the knowledge and information that makes students can easily understand and boosts their spirit for learning more. I have received some feedback from my previous parents' students as I am a friendly, trustworthy and dedicated tutor. Moreover, I believe I am a patient person as…

I think the most important thing a tutor can be is a mentor and a human being. Someone for younger students to look up to and guide but also relate to in other aspects outside of tutoring. I communicate very well and am extremely patient with younger. I'm able to clearly break down problems and can explain concepts very…

To me, the most essential role a tutor can fulfill is that of an enabler and empowerer. I believe a tutor's primary goal should be to provide students with a strong foundation of knowledge and a resilient problem-solving framework, not only to tackle academic challenges but also to navigate any obstacle life may present. An empowering tutor equips…

I think the most important think a tutor can do for a student is to give them confidence in their own abilities. Schooling, especially ones centred around standardised exams, encourage students to master themselves in order to achieve standardised tasks; however, no part of the curriculum teaches them how to do this. I feel as though it is the…

I believe that a tutor should always encourage their students to try. I think at school a lot of the time a subject or a topic might seem very scary to the student and for this reason it becomes very hard for them to start studying the subject, So, I think as a tutor the most important part of my role is to show my students that there is nothing…

In my opinion, for a student to always be good at studying and getting good grades every time, the student has to master appropriate studying strategies. Hence, the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to teach the student how to study "smartly" and be more productive. Moreover, in high school, I used to go to coaching centre…

I believe the most important thing about a tutor is being able to provide self-confidence for the student. I do this through encouragement catered both individually and to the group (if there is one). I have found that when students believe they have the ability to complete the question, they are more likely to ask questions and understand the…

Thus, my tutoring experience provided me with a safe space to propose any difficulties that I was experiencing in class, which is what I believe is the most important thing…

The most important thing for a tutor is to foster a love of learning above all us. To teach for an exam is short sighted and will ultimately provide no benefit for the student moving forward. It is important they understand the core of the content they are learning, its purpose and function in its field, as well as its interconnectedness with…

The most important thing that a tutor can do at first, is build a rapport and a relationship of trust. In order to connect with a student, a tutor must be able to forge a strong connection that is much the same as a mentor to a younger generation. Further from this, a tutor must be able to assess the genuine ability of a student - this is crucial,…

Actually engage and interact with the student to find where, and more importantly why they're struggling or need help. This not only is a short term solution to a single question which may be raised, but is extremely helpful in the long run as their problem solving skills and overall performance improves. Also, make sure the student actually…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to build the student's confidence and give them both the belief and motivation that they can achieve the academic goals that they have set. Over the years, I have developed the opinion that the teaching of transferable skills - contrary to only what is needed at the moment - is most valuable for the student’s future development. It is important to see that just completing the mandatory homework will not suffice, the real challenge is to change the mindset. As a good tutor, one has…

Not to do the work for the student. I think that a tutor should be prepared as well as eager for ever lesson and flexible to adjust to the needs of their student. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to let them go wild in their creativity, and act as more of a meander along a river's edge, guiding it in the right direction, than a dam trying to hold the water in. Maintain a positive attitude, take away the stress from learning, guide them and restructure their approach to studying when they come across roadblocks. Besides this it is essential that the tutor has good notes, visual ques, easy acronyms and memorization strategies, probes the student to think on their own and create a curiosity and interest in…

I think the most important things a tutor can do for a student, besides clarifying concepts, is to build their confidence and encourage critical thinking. Inside St PaulsTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student William worked through travel graphs and measures of central tendency in the Data topic, then tackled linear equations and Pythagoras' theorem using real-world problems.

For Year 8, Paolo focused on advanced algebra skills including collecting like terms and factorising expressions, alongside practice with perfect square formulas.

Another Year 8 student revised rates and ratios, applying these to exam-style questions, and completed challenging surface area problems for composite solids.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student was hesitant to structure written responses in maths, which led to confusion mid-question and second-guessing of chosen methods—"he needs to take a moment before answering the question."

In Year 11, a student left some homework incomplete or skipped unfamiliar questions, especially when magic squares or negative coefficients appeared; this meant gaps in understanding persisted between lessons.

A Year 4 learner often got distracted by drawing instead of focusing on set problems, requiring frequent redirection.

Meanwhile, a senior biology student showed hesitancy asking questions and reviewing errors after feedback, sometimes missing opportunities for deeper revision.

Recent Achievements

One St Pauls tutor noticed a big change in a Year 10 student who previously hesitated to ask questions; now, he's actively bringing his own challenging problems to sessions and breaking them down step by step.

A Year 8 student recently made a breakthrough with algebra—after struggling last term, she corrected her own mistakes during practice and moved on to harder equations without prompting.

In primary school, one student who used to rush through maths tasks is now pausing before answering, taking time to plan out his responses more thoughtfully than before.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Randwick Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Marcellin College.
