I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is connect with them. This results in the tutoring process becoming a much more comfortable experience, which allows for the student to learn and improve their academic abilities in an environment they enjoy. My strengths as a tutor include that I am personable and good at simplifying…

I think it goes without saying that a tutor should help their student/s to understand concepts so that the student can improve on their grades. But I believe that tutoring goes so much further beyond that. A tutor should strive to truly engage the student in their learning. A good tutor will motivate and inspire the student so that they are…

To guide the student in the right direction with the most effective way based on my personal experience, and to motivate the student in improving themselves and reaching their maximum potential, both academically and in life. I teach students based on simple and easy to understand examples. Rather than simply solving problems, I focus on the…

I believe the most important quality a tutor can have is being perceptive and responsive to the student. A tutor must be able to recognise when a student is struggling, even if the student does not explicitly say so. If a tutor continues a lesson without ensuring understanding, it can create gaps in knowledge that may become significant hurdles…

A tutor can clearly identify the strengths and weaknesses of students and guide them accordingly. He should focus on the strengths and minimise their weaknesses. This is very important as it gives a clear direction to the students. This can also help them realise what career path would be good for them. A tutor should also be able to help students…

First and foremost, helping them score well for the examinations they are going to sit for. However, along the way there, I think it's important for a tutor to help them find their own reason on why they want to do well, their own unique strengths and learning styles, guide them on how to access credible resources help them develop their own voice…

I think the bonding between the tutor and the student is very important. If the student doesn't feel comfortable talking to the tutor, he or she will never learn effectively. They need to be comfortable enough so that they can ask questions whenever they need to! I am a very easy person to talk to. I am not shy and am willing to speak up. As a…

Imparting information is an important part of being a tutor, but modelling curiosity, a genuine love of learning and knowledgem and above all showing others what it looks like to be passionate about the at or discipline is as important. I think enthusiasm is important - I have found in my own studies that when someone isn't enthusiastic about what they are teaching, it can easily dampen one's own ability to take on information. As i mentioned, being patient and encouraging is key to making students feel confident in their learning. Finally, being organised so that when the lesson…

A tutor not only can help in passing the knowlegde but also can help him/her understand the life experience which he/she has seen till now. Obviously, an important thing that a tutor can provide to their students is to support them academically. A tutor should be articulate about their workings, and master a great command over the topic. However, a tutor should also act as a mental support. They should act as an intermediary and acts as additional help if their students have…

I believe that making students understand the way to answer question is very important. Problem-solving skills are what they really need in the future instead of helping him to solve them. Moreover, to make them enjoy studying the subject is crucial as well. If you hate the subject, you can never do well on it. Providing students with guidance is…

I believe it is important to address the student's main academic concerns by understanding their goals and deriving a plan to achieve those goals. Following which, it will be essential to chart the student's progress and be flexible in changing the lesson programs to enable targetted improvement. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is aid them in being confident enough to always attempt a problem. A great tutor helps a student to put aside the "oh no, I don't know what to do" thought or feeling and and least try to break the problem into something they do know how to do. My strengths as a tutor come in my genuine passion…

I feel my biggest strength would be my…

Inside St PetersTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Scarlett practised breaking up four- and six-digit numbers in non-standard ways to build place value understanding, and explored how rearranging digits changes number size.

Year 11 student Sam worked through algebra basics, graphing linear equations, and used the law of cosines to solve trigonometry problems involving similar triangles.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Ella focused on quadratic equations—factoring and solving—and applied her knowledge to real-world contexts like calculating tax and depreciation.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student expressed feeling overwhelmed by multi-step word problems, often unsure how to break them down; as one tutor noted, "she stated that she is often overwhelmed at all the information given to her."

In Year 10, missing key details in finance and algebra questions led to incomplete answers—skipped questions on a practice test remained unattempted until prompted.

For Year 11, not reviewing all test topics resulted in missed easy marks in rates and ratios, simply because those areas were set aside.

When reading exam questions too quickly in senior years, students lost points from overlooked instructions or misapplied formulas.

Recent Achievements

In Year 11, Kiera had struggled to confidently set up algebraic equations, but she filled out an entire interest table on her own after just a bit of prompting—she even tackled several practice test questions she'd previously avoided and got half of them right without guessing.

Raphael (Year 7) used to need help for every step with algorithms; now he completes most questions solo and explains his reasoning clearly when asked.

Meanwhile, Scarlett in Year 3 has started asking how to spell unfamiliar words instead of skipping them, showing new initiative during writing tasks.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as St Peters / Sydenham Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Peters Public School.
