The most important thing a tutor can do for a student it be approachable. If the student feels comfortable asking questions and being honest about what they don't understand, it makes teaching them much easier. That's why, as a tutor, I would do my very best to be friendly and comfortable with the student, and make sure they can enjoy learning…

Most students struggle to gain confidence in solving problems which in turn leads them to be unmotivated to study. Therefore, I believe that tutoring is not just teaching concepts but also building an environment where students feel comfortable to make mistakes and learn from it. From experience, I believe that the most effective way is to…

A tutor's role gets more prominent when s/he tries to enable the learner to understand the language and use the language in the real world. Put it simply, the learner should be enabled to understand English, analyse it, speak it and more importantly use the English functions in the right place. For instance, in sessions with learners, I will…

I believe that a tutor needs to be able to explain a certain topic in different ways as one approach is not a fit for all. Alongside this, communicating and being emotionally intelligent allows to truly understand your student and how they deal with acedemic pressure etc. Ultimately, patience is the key when it comes to tutoring as students may…

In my high school days, i went to alot of tutors and i learned the difference between a good and a bad tutor. Bad tutors i believe stay within the box, afraid to go out and expose the students true potential. I think that structure and predictability is the most important thing a tutor can do, as it is easier for students to know what to expect in class, and future lessons. Having organised lesson plans not only ensures that all key topics are covered, but also allows students to focus more on the material itself rather than wondering what will come…

Inside Strathmore HeightsTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 3 student Jonas focused on multiplication and subtraction strategies, working through examples to strengthen his calculation skills.

In Year 8, Louis reviewed negative numbers and basic algebra, using practice problems to build confidence with equations involving negatives.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Emily tackled linear equations in two variables and quadratic equations, focusing on factorisation techniques and applying them to exam-style questions for deeper understanding.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 Mathematics, one student frequently rushed through algebra steps, leading to sign errors and missed marks; as noted, "he needs to slow down sometimes and follow the steps."

For a Year 11 English assignment, another student didn't realize an essay required 100 words—skipping instructions due to not checking task requirements.

In Year 7 Maths, forgetting basic materials or over-relying on mental maths left gaps in recalling negative number rules.

Meanwhile, a primary student working on reading would skip lines of text and misread punctuation, which made understanding stories harder and slowed their progress during sessions.

Recent Achievements

One Strathmore Heights tutor noticed a Year 9 student who previously got stuck with negative numbers now working through these problems much more smoothly, only occasionally needing reminders.

In another session, a high schooler took the initiative to start writing down new vocabulary and definitions during reading—something he'd resisted before—which helped him read an entire stave without stopping for help.

Meanwhile, a younger student in Year 5 surprised her tutor by explaining each error she found in her own narrative and even started sharing thoughtful opinions about her book club novel "Wonder."

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Glenroy Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Strathmore North Primary School.
