The most important thing a teacher can do for a student is to be understanding and friendly to them so that they don't hesitate to share their problems. focusing more on the topics they find difficult to understand and being there for them for as long as they need is the best thing a tutor can do. Whilst ensuring the student learns or develops topics/skills is important, fostering an interest and curiosity in the subject is more important in my opinion. Through the support of teachers and students in my schooling I have grown a deep interest in maths, science and literature, which makes study and learning these subjects easy! I am patient,…

A tutor can offer student great flexibility in teaching materials and methods that may not be available in a classroom setting. Going through the student's difficulties one by one, with personal attention, makes a significant difference to a learning environment. I am very organized and I understand how difficult it can be to learn different…

Not only teaching a subject, but making they more confident and independent. For me, the best teachers/tutors that I had were those that showed me the importance of having a "problem solving" mentality, instead of simply learning how to get some questions right. I am very experienced and I have dealt with many students, that had different…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is to create trust with their students where the student can practice and learn comfortably no matter what their level is, and for the tutor to serve as a sort of life mentor on the side. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is engage them in the content by answering a simple question: where is this subject used practically in real life? This means that for every new concepts being introduced, we should not dive in the boring formulas right away but rather talk about why the formula even exist or its role in…

I believe that encouragement and support is crucial to tutoring. A tutor must be able to reassure students when they feel stuck, or discouraged about a certain subject. I'm very personable. I think self-taught is the most important thing that a tutor can teach a student. This is because self-taught can go with them anywhere but the tutor can not. Additionally, a tutor can not teach a student everything, so at some points, the student needs to explore themselves. I am patient and independent in studying. This is because I have been…

I believe that it is paramount for a tutor to understand that every student learns differently and therefore may need a different approach to studying to achieve their goals. A tutor should ask their student how they learn best and implement this feedback into their approach to tutoring. Similarly, it is important to understand that each student…

There are a few but I think the point of a tutor is for reinforcement. There is no way that a tutor will be able to pump out as much content as a student will be able to consume from traditional school, however with the 1 on 1 nature of tuition, tutors can take topics a lot further than a teacher would for an entire class. Not only this, a tutor…

One of the most vital things a tutor should do is ensure that he is understood teaching-wise and that he understands his pupils perfectly. One thing that some teachers don't have is empathy for the unique condition of a student. A student's ability to learn can be affected in various ways, like by his surroundings and so on. It is significantly…

Inside SunshineTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 Vincent focused on area, volume, percentages, ratios, and mixed numbers in maths homework review, while also practising reading comprehension and grammar in English.

For Year 10 Arshdeep, the lesson addressed motion on an inclined plane by breaking down gravity into components and calculating net force, as well as exploring the role of tension and drag forces using diagrams.

In Year 12 Chemistry with Ruby, revision included balancing ionic equations, identifying functional groups such as alkanes and alkenes, and applying mole calculations to empirical and molecular formulae.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student arrived for Chemistry without their class notes or materials, which made it harder to address gaps in ionic equations and electron configuration—he had significant gaps that will require further study.

In Year 8 Maths, one learner's workbook was disorganised and missing homework, so practice with fractions and column addition could not be checked.

A VCE student tackling comparative essays sometimes avoided using feedback on structure, leading to repeated confusion over evidence selection.

During a senior Methods session, rushing through complex number problems led to overlooked details; time was lost fixing these instead of moving ahead.

Recent Achievements

One Sunshine tutor noticed a big shift in a Year 11 physics student who, after weeks of staying quiet, finally started asking for help with concepts like time dilation—he now explains his reasoning out loud instead of guessing.

Another high school student working on comparative essays initially struggled to plan ideas but recently began mapping out argument structures independently, which is new for her.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who used to avoid reading tasks volunteered to read the next chapter aloud during their session and tackled unfamiliar words by sounding them out without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Brimbank Libraries—or at your child's school (with permission), like Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception School.
