To recognise that no two students are the same and that a process like learning needs to be personalised so that the best results are achieved. This personalisation also means that its much more likely for the student to open up and fully engage in the process of assisted learning as they can feel that the session is catered just towards their…

I believe the most important thing for a tutor is to listen to and understand their student's weaknesses and strengths. Often I find many people lack personalisation and simply follow the curriculum. I like to take a different approach where I really personalise my teaching depending on the student's capabilities and learning style. I also find…

have patients, allow them to feel comfortable with being wrong, so that they continue to try until they discover the right way to solve a particular problem. resilience is a great life skill, and something that a good tutor should seek to build in their students. I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is build a student's confidence. When students believe they can learn and improve, everything else becomes easier. Beyond that, it's about meeting them where they are listening carefully, identifying gaps in understanding, and explaining concepts in ways that connect personally. A great tutor also…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to not only be able to teach them the material, but to also be able to mentor them. By mentoring, I mean having a close, trusting relationship with your student in order to help them improve their skills on a daily basis. The mentoring relationship allows learning to go beyond…

I think a tutor's only job is to motivate their students and let them develop their own interests in the subject.  I think once you motivate them and make them think about the subject on their own, your job is done.  From then on, it's a matter of aiding their intellectual journey.  And I think what enables tutors to fulfil that job is using…

To me, a tutor can make learning real, relevant and interesting.Tutor can make learning relevant to students's interest which in itself is half the battle won as research has proved that one learns things quickly if those aligns to one's interest. For e.g., a student who like solving maths puzzles will quickly learn new formulas and other things…

Guidance. It's always guidance. Tutors facilitate learning and help activates students' potential. :) Tutors receive all the questions most of the students don't ask in class, and I find it amazing because real learning happens between tutors and students. I already know how to handle them and I can give excellent activities that they can enjoy…

I think it is important for a tutor to help students build their confidence. We need to let the students feel that it is okay to have confusion and grow from their mistakes. Make them enjoy studying more, and imbue them with better study practices. Many students suffer from math anxiety or procrastination issues which hamper the effort they already put in. I'm quite patient and very willing to continually sit on a topic or point with a student until they fully understand it - which often happens for topics that are…

I think the most important things a tutor can do are: build the student’s confidence, make the content feel manageable, and create a structured plan for improvement. That means listening carefully to where the student is stuck, explaining concepts in simple language, and giving them targeted practice so they can experience small wins. It also…

Tutor not only teaches you one certain subject they have the ability to teach a different lifestyle. This for me is the most important thing. My motto is, “Train up a child in the way he/she should go; and when he/she is old, he/she will not depart from it" Being patient has always been my best friend. As a tutor you need to be patient as well…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to ensure that learners would feel safe and secured when they are being attended to. Aside from that, a tutor should also consider the transfer of knowledge where tutors act as facilitators for the students learning. I believe that my strengths as a tutor are my desire to produce outstanding…

Studying techniques, creating good habits and of course, feedback for improvements! These are the important aspects that a tutor should show their students. There is much more to learning than parroting back facts - information needs to absorbed, regurgitated, reused in a practical sense. I have much hands-on experience in using my chosen skills -…

In my high school days, i went to alot of tutors and i learned the difference between a good and a bad tutor. Bad tutors i believe stay within the box, afraid to go out and expose the students true potential. A good tutor can not only help the student keep on track of school work and assist in any difficulties the student may have, but also push…

Listen to the students and understand what the actual issue is. More often than not it's not the concept itself but how the student is processing the concept, and if you don't see that you'll only be able to help them understand through repetition. My ability to tailor lessons to a students needs and study styles. I enjoy working with both…

Inside Sunshine NorthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Allegra worked through ordering fractions on a number line and practiced adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions in revision exercises.

In Year 10, Jayden completed practice exams for an upcoming maths test, focusing on applying algebraic techniques and problem-solving under timed conditions.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Arjun focused on quadratic equations by learning to use the quadratic formula and mastering the discriminant to solve for unknown constants and intersection points.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student relied heavily on memorization in Methods and hesitated to use the graphic calculator efficiently, slowing progress with quadratic problems. As a tutor noted, "needs much more practice with the graphic calculator… and mastering the quadratic formula."

In contrast, a Year 5 student repeatedly forgot to bring books home or complete homework, making it hard to track content or prepare for upcoming lessons—she arrived without materials and struggled to recall past work.

Organization lapses and inconsistent revision led both students to forget key methods or feel unprepared when new topics appeared, leaving them frustrated in-session.

Recent Achievements

One Sunshine North tutor recently noticed a Year 7 student who used to avoid asking for help now regularly pauses to check her understanding before moving on, showing much more initiative than in earlier sessions.

In high school, a Year 10 student who once needed step-by-step guidance with circular functions can now recall key values and solve complex questions mentally. Last week she completed advanced problems under timed conditions with minimal prompting.

Another win came from a Year 12 maths session where the student applied newly learned formulas to trickier graphing questions and immediately explained her reasoning back to the tutor without hesitation.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Brimbank Libraries—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Bernadette's School.
