The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to empower them to reach their full potential, both academically and personally. By providing personalised support, fostering a love of learning, and nurturing students' confidence and independence As a tutor, I believe my strengths lie in several key areas: 1. Adaptability: I can tailor…

The bare minimum a tutor should do is to aid a student in their academic journey, however the optimal result would be for tutors to create an enjoyable learning experience for the student. Specifically in mathematics, I believe I have the creativity to come up with multiple approaches to a certain problem. Thinking outside of the box, I could show…

As a tutor, I believe in catering to the students needs. Different students have different learning styles, so it is important to adapt my teaching styles to the individual. I also think compassion and understanding are necessary traits for tutors. Every student learns at different paces, and can grasp certain topics quicker than others. Patience…

Be outgoing. The worst thing is for a student to be scared to ask for help because they feel embarrassed. A great tutor has to focus on creating an open environment that allows this communcation Being able to adapt my teaching methods in accordance with the student. I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is help a student build both understanding and confidence. A tutor should first identify the student's individual strengths and areas for improvement, then provide clear, structured guidance that matches their learning needs. The most important thing a tutor can do for their student is to instil confidence. A tutor should promote a genuine interest in a subject, ultimately empowering students to become independent and effective learners. They can do this by promoting critical thinking and providing constructive feedback. Given my experience with tutoring, I believe my…

Create a comfortable, relaxed environment to learn and ask questions. Improve confidence: many students don't know what they're capable of, and just need the self-belief to show it off. Be able to react to a student's needs as they develop and progress in order to continue learning as efficiently as possible. I believe I am relatable and good…

Tutoring is about building a relationship with the student based on trust and respect, making the student feel comfortable enough to ask questions, express their concerns and doubts, which was a key aspect for me when I was learning. Over time, I have learnt that my enthusiasm for the subject is contagious, it kindles a love for the subject in the…

I think it is important for tutors to show patience and understanding towards students. It can be frustrating when one struggles to understand a new concept and I want to ensure that the student finds enjoyment in their work rather than a sense of dread toward it. Therefore, I highly emphasize an approach of patience to foster safe and enjoyable…

A tutor needs to be patient and build a healthy learning curve. One of the most important things for a tutor is to be encouraging and positive. Negativity can lead to resentment towards a subject and deflect the student from making a genuine effort to learn. A tutor also needs to be well-versed with the material so they can teach the student as…

I think enthusiasm is important - I have found in my own studies that when someone isn't enthusiastic about what they are teaching, it can easily dampen one's own ability to take on information. As i mentioned, being patient and encouraging is key to making students feel confident in their learning. Finally, being organised so that when the lesson…

Bring them self-confidence. Because as a former student, this is the most important thing I got from my tutor. Students who take tuition often do so because they lack confidence in their grades, or even receive pressure from others such as parents, and so can become agitated or even bored with their studies, and thus engage in self-denial. If you…

I believe the most important quality a tutor can have is being perceptive and responsive to the student. A tutor must be able to recognise when a student is struggling, even if the student does not explicitly say so. If a tutor continues a lesson without ensuring understanding, it can create gaps in knowledge that may become significant hurdles…

Building their confidence first. A student who believes they can improve will put in the effort. Beyond that, teach them how to think through problems independently so they don't need you forever. And really listen to where they're struggling because what a student says they don't understand and what they actually don't understand are often two…

The most important aspect of a tutor is able to communicate clearly to students. Not only that we need to be knowledgeable, we also need to be able to support with younger students who have hard time solving problems. Tiffany is currently tutoring my son and daughter. The process of setting up the sessions was quick and efficient. She has always been on time, committed and focused during the sessions. The children have found her to be friendly and approachable and have really found the three lessons so far to be extremely helpful. I would definitely recommend EzyMaths.

Inside SydenhamTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Emma worked through angle properties for parallel lines and used diagrams to explore alternate, corresponding, and cointerior angles.

In Year 9, Alex focused on trigonometric ratios and their applications, as well as reinforcing index laws with practice problems.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Lucas tackled standard differentiation techniques including the quotient rule, applying these skills to textbook exercises and real exam questions.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Chemistry, one student relied on entering chemical equations straight into the calculator rather than writing them out—this habit led to repeated errors in balancing equations and missed marks.

For a Year 9 Maths student, index laws were an ongoing challenge; as a tutor noted, "he tended to skip showing working when applying index rules," making it hard to catch mistakes early.

Meanwhile, a senior student's proof-writing in Maths lacked clear formatting, so their logical steps weren't always obvious. In these moments, accuracy suffered and corrections took longer than needed.

Recent Achievements

One Sydenham tutor noticed a big shift in a Year 10 student who used to freeze when tackling simultaneous equations; now, she's able to set up the equations and choose between substitution or elimination without prompting.

In another session, a Year 11 student who struggled with linking rates to differential equations is finally making those connections on his own, confidently talking through each step.

Meanwhile, a younger student in Year 6 recently began identifying like terms independently and multiplying coefficients—last term he'd wait for hints before trying. Last week, he asked the tutor for extra practice problems on fractions.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as St Peters / Sydenham Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Tempe High School.
