The most important thing is that a tutor is able to communicate well with student and understand her point of view, opinion and difficulties. Tutor also have to make sure student understands the concept and still make learning enjoyable so student would not feel dragged to go for extra class after school hours. The most important thing as a tutor is to encourage students to ask as many questions as possible. It is very important to provide them that environment and to gain their trust that you will provide them the right solution. As a tutor, I think, my biggest strength is being patient with my students. Also, that I like to share my knowledge with my…

In my view, the most important things a tutor can do is to build a positive relationship with a student which is the key to become an effective teacher. This is important because it is impossible to engage a student into learning without building a positive rapport with them. The other important thing is to always encourage them to keep trying and…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do are to build the student's confidence, identify their individual learning gaps and teach them strategies they can use independently. A tutor should not just give answers but help students understand the process behind the answer. It is also important to create a positive and encouraging…

I think one of the biggest things a tutor should be doing is listening to their student: their learning style, where they get stuck, and what they need to help them improve. Often students are not sufficiently heard in the classroom and it means they do not have their specific needs catered. That should be at the core of tutoring. I am a very…

Make the student love the subject. There are many ways varying from a student to the other. If a student falls in love with the subject, he will comprehend it, not just learn it. Inside Sydney Olympic ParkTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student completed a Maths Olympiad worksheet and workbook activities focusing on addition and subtraction with two- to four-digit numbers, as well as starting multiplication with larger numbers.

Year 9 student Alyssa tackled direct variation in linear relationships and practiced rearranging formulas for simple interest calculations using real-life examples.

For Year 12, David worked through differentiation techniques including the product and quotient rules, and was introduced to inverse trigonometric functions such as arcsin(x) and arccos(x).

Recent Challenges

A Year 3 student often hesitated when writing out division steps, preferring to "do it in his mind," which led to misaligned digits and confusion about which number belonged above the line—"he needs to write every step," noted one tutor.

In Year 11 Mathematics, a student avoided writing full working for induction proofs and struggled with linking nk and nk+1, causing repeated errors in logical progression.

Meanwhile, a Year 12 student's revision focused only on familiar trigonometric formulas, leaving gaps when tackling exam questions that required lesser-known identities or domains. This resulted in uncertainty during multi-step problems and slowed progress under time pressure.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Sydney Olympic Park noticed that one Year 11 student who previously hesitated to ask for clarification now regularly voices questions about tricky derivatives, especially when working with inverse trigonometric functions—a real shift from staying silent and guessing.

In another high school session, a student managed to identify the critical path in a complex network diagram after struggling to visualise connections just weeks ago.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who often made errors with subtraction recently completed an entire quiz on addition and subtraction without a single mistake and even tackled some harder problems by choice.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Lidcombe Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Newington Public School.
