I believe the most important things that a tutor can do for a student mainly relies on what the end goal of the student is. If it is just to get the homework done, it will get done. But, for me as a tutor, I would personally make sure that every student understands the concept from the beginning rather than providing a general overview. I believe…

To begin with, a tutor must encourage a student to do better and learn from previous mistakes. Getting upset/impatient with a student is only going to discourage the student and prevent him/her from reaching potential; and that's the opposite of the desired goal. In addition, confidence has to be built in a student; this way a student will be able…

I think the greatest gift a tutor can provide to a student is support. School can often be an isolating and intimidating experience, and often students, despite being remarkably talented, feel afraid to take risks and go beyond what is expected of them. A tutor can also make the learning experience far more rewarding and enjoyable. Students feel…

I think one of the most important things a tutor can do is create a comfortable and supportive environment where the student feels confident to ask questions and make mistakes. I think communication is one of the most crucial skills. I believe every students, somehow, are capable of learning. So even though I don't have extraordinary skills to teach them, they will learn from my explanation. To me, the most essential role a tutor can fulfill is that of an enabler and empowerer. An empowering tutor equips…

Samantha, Tennyson Point

Inside Tennyson PointTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Amber worked on her Chemistry worksheet focused on radioactive decay and also reviewed chemical bonding for an upcoming assessment.

Year 10 student Imogen practised solving algebraic equations and changing the subject of formulas, using guided examples from her maths text.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Michael concentrated on logarithms in mathematics and motion in one dimension for physics, working through problems to strengthen understanding of both topics.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student in mathematics often worked out answers mentally rather than setting out clear, step-by-step working on paper—he tends to work out the answers in his head instead of writing out his working out, one tutor noted.

This habit made it harder to spot small calculation errors, especially in algebra and inequalities, and meant revision was less effective later.

Meanwhile, a senior economics student had incomplete notes for case study topics like financial ratios, making exam preparation challenging when linking concepts under time pressure.

In both cases, organization and visible process steps limited recall during tests.

Recent Achievements

In Year 8 maths, Tyler had previously struggled with algebraic fractions but now independently works through complex problems, applying skills from earlier lessons without prompting.

A Year 11 chemistry student who often hesitated to try questions solo has started completing most chemical reaction exercises on her own during sessions, only asking for help when truly needed.

Meanwhile, a primary school student who used to avoid multiplying and dividing negative numbers is now confidently using number lines and finishing related worksheets each week. Last session, she solved every question without skipping any steps.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Gladesville Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Gladesville Public School.
