Tutors are there to motivate a student to achieve greater outcomes in life, principally in the area of academic study. Whether this is confidence, the knowledge that someone believes in them, strategies for studying and/or comprehension, through to developing initiative, self correction skills and the ability to constantly improve, tutoring is a…

To prepare for class and constantly check up on their progress. Students often need help outside of class, which lots of tutors do not provide. I am always accessible outside of class hours, ensuring students get help whenever they need it. Another important thing is to motivate the student. I always felt inspired to study after my sessions with…

In my opinion the most important thing is to teach your students HOW to learn. This means to teach them how to approach a new topic and break it into smaller steps, and how to use a study technique that work best for them. As we have all heard: give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime. :)…

Helping them complete their work is part of the job. However, the most important thing is making sure students are relaxed. If they are getting overwhelmed they shouldn't be pushed because then it'll make them feel like they can't do it. So tackling their weaknesses at a realistic pace will help them not feel pressured to understand straight away.…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to provide clarity and build confidence. It is crucial to break down complex ideas into manageable sections and go through these thoroughly. A tutor should also create a safe and supportive environment where students feel comfortable making mistakes and asking questions. Beyond…

A tutor must be patient and listen to how the student feels and explains their material. Without this we can't understand where the gaps are in the students knowledge OR whether they really do understand, but just in a different way. I think a common misconception about a tutor's job is that their whole purpose is to get their tutee an A+. While this is obviously a wonderful side-effect of tutoring, the most important thing a tutor can do is to develop and improve a student's ability to problem-solve, learn, and work effectively to complete their academic goals. The difference…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is not just to teach them content - its essential to help a student become more self-sufficient in the field they are studying, and to teach them how to learn more effectively. For example, when teaching a child mathematics, I view simply teaching the content as not enough, as if you…

Imparting an enjoyment of learning something new. I am only with the student for a short time compared to their time in school, so increasing intrinsic motivation to learn has a much greater effect in the long run, as well as decreasing the chance of burnout due to stress in the higher grades. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make sure there is continual improvement in their work. If there are signs the student is not improving, then it's important to look for weaknesses or anything the student is struggling with and work on those areas. I would highly recommend using EzyMath Tutoring for face to face or Facetime tutoring. My children's confidence in maths has increased dramatically since we have been using them. Will our tutor is excellent! We haven't even needed to stop during self isolation!
Sarah, The Gap

Inside The GapTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Will focused on factor trees and their use in multiplication, then reviewed basic algebra concepts.

For Year 8, Viran worked through exam revision by tackling a mix of basic, application, and complex problems across recent topics.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Lauren practiced finding the area and perimeter for a housing plan assignment, using real-world measurements to apply geometric reasoning.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student repeatedly avoided asking for help until prompted, especially in algebra and electrical engineering—"he finds it really difficult to know where to begin"—leading to missed opportunities for feedback and slower progress on homework.

In a Year 8 lesson, the lack of clear written working in equations caused confusion when revisiting earlier steps; messy notes made it hard to track mistakes or improvements.

One Year 3 student still counted with fingers and rushed addition tasks, which resulted in frequent errors and frustration during basic arithmetic practice.

Senior students sometimes submitted assignments with incomplete or context-lacking notes, making revision more challenging later on.

Recent Achievements

One The Gap tutor noticed a high school student, Viran, has shifted from needing repeated prompting to now asking for help independently as soon as he's stuck—he used to wait quietly or guess.

Another older student, Rurari, who previously took minimal notes and stayed quiet during sessions, is now actively taking detailed notes and regularly asks questions to clarify concepts like the Unit Circle.

In a recent primary session, Tara moved beyond just identifying fractions; she can now confidently explain fraction equivalence and represent them visually without hesitation.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Ashgrove Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like The Gap State High School.
