I think the most important thing as an economics tutor you need to be honest, be flexible, be patient, be a good listener, teach the student how to learn. I believe tutors fill a different role than teachers and parents, and that puts them in a unique position to support students. Personal relationships are foundational to student success -- the…

Personal relationships are foundational to student success -- the more connected a student feels to his or her tutor, the more the tutor creates trust and respect, essential ingredients for students to learn well. I am an expert in Math and Programming and their academic content -- I know the subject's concepts, ideas and problems inside out. I…

The most important thing an economics tutor can do for a student is being prepared. I have had 1-1 Spanish tutoring in the past, and every week my tutor would arrive prepared with documents and interactive lessons, which were fundamental in enriching my learning of the subject and making the sessions more enjoyable. Additionally, the tutor needs…

To try and understand the student and not judge them but instead work with them to gain a better understanding of the subject. I am good at empathizing with students and figuring out what they don't understand in the problem. Then breaking down what they don't understand into more digestible…

I believe the most important thing an economics tutor can do is teach with a growth mindset and empower students. A tutor should help students build confidence in their own abilities and encourage them to believe that they can succeed, even when the material is challenging. It is also important to foster a deeper understanding beyond memorising…

I think the key thing an economics tutor can do for a student is ensure that their individual learning habits are in order, creating an essential degree of independence. I have found it extremely valuable to ensure students develop a solid work ethic and understand how they can study effectively. In this sense tutoring plays a supplementary role,…

The most important thing an economics tutor can do for a student is adapt to suit their needs. Whilst many tutors can simply pass on content, a strong tutor is capable of teaching content in a way that suits the learning needs of a student. This may include using different communication methods, teaching at different paces and understanding the…

It is important to be patient and approachable so that students feel comfortable coming to you with their queries. Availability and dependability is also important. If a student has last minute issues the night before their exam it is important that they can rely on their tutor to get back to them by the end of the day with an answer. I am patient…

Patience and not comparing them with the others. I believe that each student has their own pace of learning. Lack of patience and comparing them with others will certainly hamper their learning process and will give them less confidence on their studies. The most important thing an economics tutor can do is help a student build a foundation of confidence and independent thinking. Rather than simply providing the correct answers, a tutor should guide a student through the logic of a problem so they can eventually solve it on their own. It is also vital to build a strong rapport where the student…

There could by many reasons why students come to tutoring: they're struggling to keep up, they want to excel or simply their parents want them to go. No matter the reason, what I think is most important for an economics tutor to do is to try and make the students actually interested in the content in front of them and then aid them as they grapple…

Inside The RocksTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Maya worked on plotting graphs and identifying x- and y-intercepts, as well as understanding linear relationships through visual examples.

Year 10 student Alex focused on solving advanced trigonometry questions from a recent test and reviewed polynomials in chapter 22b.1 for deeper algebraic skills.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Emily practiced expanding and factorising quadratic expressions before tackling worded problems involving algebraic fractions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student needed frequent reminders to finish written DI work and left parts of assignments incomplete, which led to confusion during revision.

In Year 11 English, reluctant to explain effect on audience and often did not link back to topic sentence, making it hard for ideas to develop into full arguments.

A Year 9 learner forgot key steps in long division and avoided double-checking, so errors persisted across sessions.

Another senior student was not fully prepared for the test on domain and range—missing notes meant time was spent re-learning rather than building new skills.

Recent Achievements

One tutor in The Rocks noticed a big shift with a Year 9 student who used to rely heavily on worked examples but now solves algebraic fraction problems independently, showing real independence.

A Year 12 student, after struggling to organise her ideas, managed to write a detailed speech plan unprompted—something she'd avoided before.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who was hesitant to ask for help has started putting her hand up when stuck and recently read an entire short paragraph aloud with only one prompt for support.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Customs House Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Observatory Hill Environmental Education Centre.
