A good tutor listens carefully, adapts their teaching to the student’s learning style, and breaks complex concepts into manageable steps. It’s also important to…

Become a role model and help inspire them to become the best version of themselves. I want to be someone who can help them expand their horizon for learning. And understand that maths and science isn't their enemy. Studying isn't their enemy. I feel what's most important is being an educator not a grader. Patience, and repetition, never…

Make them feel comfortable with you so they interact with you during the class as high interactive classes makes the subject more interesting and students tend to start liking the subject as well thereby spending more time with the subject. I also think tutors must try to shorten the notes they give and make it very specific so students can easily…

The most important thing is allowing students to become independent. The tutor should show them how to solve problems so that they can do them themselves and not just solve problems for them. My strength is illustrating concepts and finding the right examples that explain the point best. I also have good communication skills that make the student…

My approach is to pinpoint their strengths, address any gaps, and equip them with…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to help them to understand problems and have strong basic knowledge. Therefore, they can do their homework without a tutor or teacher to ask. Tutors should personalise their teaching for each of their students. This involves understanding how a student learns best in order to cater to their learning needs and habits. For example, I find that some students prefer particular types of examples over others, and this informs me about how I can best explain new concepts to them. I've tutored…

Treat each student as an individual person. The same methods of tutoring might not apply on the other. Moreover patience is necessary. Tutors should maintain a pace comfortable for the student. Tutors should be humble enough to admit if they don't know few answers and should be able to research and provide the answers to the student. I learn…

Giving a student enough time to get understand something. This could mean waiting for a student to attempt a question and ask for help, instead of helping them right away. Inside ThornburyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Daniel focused on solving worded problems by translating real-life scenarios into mathematical equations and practiced skills with quadratic equations, including factorising and sketching their graphs.

For Year 11, Lily worked through probability concepts such as sample spaces, conditional probability, and the addition and multiplication rules, using tables to clarify multi-stage experiments.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Max tackled calculus topics by reviewing differentiation from first principles as well as applying derivative rules to interpret the meaning of slopes and turning points in functions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student reviewing organic chemistry sometimes skimmed over questions without fully checking charge states, as a tutor noted: "Needs to remember states and to check over charge of molecules."

In Methods calculus (Year 12), another student showed confidence but occasionally struggled to set out full working for integration constants, leading to uncertainty about final answers.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 learner tackling multi-digit subtraction would often forget to carry the one, making it tricky to spot where errors crept in.

During practice, the urge to finish quickly meant small details—like careful reading or stepwise calculations—were missed, resulting in avoidable confusion mid-task.

Recent Achievements

A Thornbury tutoring session saw a Year 11 student tackle trigonometric relationships independently, where previously he'd often paused or waited for hints before attempting these questions.

Another high schooler who used to get stuck factoring polynomials was able to complete almost all quadratic equations without any help, showing real self-sufficiency during revision.

In the primary years, one student who would hesitate over times tables managed to recall and write out their 9s with only minor prompting—something that's been a challenge in earlier sessions.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Northcote Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Mary's School.
