The most important thing a tutor can do is build strong fundamentals for the student which the student can then practice and ask for help if needed. This allows the student to gain a better understanding of the content and as a consequence increases their mental capacity and brain activity leading to an increase in marks at school. I feel I can…

The most important thing a tutor can do would be to personalise the study plan and instruction to ensure that the student's weaknesses and strengths are being addressed and to have the patience to explain concepts repeatedly if the student doesn't understand it at first. Often times, students seek outside tutoring as they feel the help they…

Teaching the content required within a particular subject is only the start of what a tutor can do for their student, but teaching them how to apply everything they have learned to not only the subject at hand but how they are tested within that subject. Since going through the HSC I have learned that some subjects teach content in a very…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to encourage them to always try their best and never give up even if their marks are not the highest. I strongly believe that any improvement should be taken as a win, and this is something that I endeavor to promote through my teaching style and attitude to lessons and students. Having been…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is build a student’s confidence. When a student believes they’re capable, their results naturally improve. It’s also really important to explain concepts in a way that actually makes sense to that student, not just repeat what the textbook says. Every student learns differently, so adapting…

A tutor's main focus should be on helping the student improve their abilities and assisting them in overcoming their weaknesses. Good communication and a good understanding are essential aspects in ensuring a tutor is able to focus on the student's weaknesses and help them improve in the areas they most need to work on. Most importantly, a tutor…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is firstly enhance their knowledge. Also schools may be a great learning space, sometimes because of the amount of students in a class, it may become hard for a child to communicate and get extra help from the teacher. I think its vital for a tutor make studying the subject rewarding to the student. Math eventually became my favourite subject in school but I started off in 5th Grade pretty weak at it, it was only because my teacher in the 6th grade had a very creative and rewarding way of teaching that I started to enjoy and eventually I got really good at it. I…

Inside ToongabbieTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Aman focused on solving simultaneous equations using both elimination and substitution methods, and also practised graphing linear equations from given formulas.

Year 11 student Grace revised differentiation techniques for trigonometric functions as part of the Stage 6 Maths Advanced calculus curriculum, then moved to integration problems involving exponentials and logarithms.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Priya tackled Financial Mathematics by calculating compound interest and worked through sequences in arithmetic series, reinforcing these with targeted exam-style questions.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 algebra, one student's tendency to copy notes too quickly led to missing signs—"he would be copying notes but miss a sign or two because he go past too fast"—resulting in confusion when factorising expressions.

For a Year 11 trigonometry graphing task, another struggled with interpreting questions that were "a little wordy," making it harder to tackle exam-style problems without pausing to fully read instructions.

In both cases, the urge to rush or avoid careful reading meant extra time was spent fixing errors rather than building fluency with more challenging material.

Recent Achievements

During a Toongabbie tutoring session, Grace, a high school student, tackled her recent exam with noticeably greater independence. She earned most of her marks in financial mathematics and statistics after previously hesitating on multi-step problems.

Another tutor noted Oliver, also in high school, who now solves financial calculation questions quickly and confidently, having struggled before to select the right formulas without prompting.

Meanwhile, Isaac in Year 6 has started asking clarifying questions about his assignments rather than waiting for hints. This shows a real shift from passive participation to active engagement during lessons.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Constitution Hill Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Anthony's Primary School.
