I think that a tutor should not limit themselves to just subject knowledge. They should research more on effective teaching methods and strategies that might help them connect to their students more. They should develop practices that make a student's life easier and should understand the individual needs of the students. Often tutors have to…

A tutor can provide little tips and tricks to answering questions, especially in Math. Always be within reach, in terms of communication platforms, so that the student can clarify any doubts at any point in time. A tutor should also be flexible to the timings of the students yet not compromising on other students schedule. I am patient, clear…

(1) Value of patience: Being a tutor/teacher means I have to face a range of students whose level of understanding completely vary. My students will emotionally accept me only if I am patient enough. (2) Value of resilience: Teaching is very flexible as I should be active to explore the strengths and weaknesses of my students, finally develop…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is to get a proper understanding of the level of mathematical 'maturity' of a specific student, rather than just assuming a certain background knowledge. Once this is established, it's possible to get the core of what exactly a student is struggling with (usually a particular fundamental concept) and…

The most important thing is trust that both tutor and student should have on each other. An ease of asking questions and making mistakes is another very important thing. Its okay to make mistakes but if your student is afraid of you , they would never ask questions and will be afraid to make mistakes so the tutor will never be able to…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to open a rapport that makes them feel safe and understood, an environment where they are not afraid to try and even not afraid to fail, in the knowledge that with help and direction they can try again and do better. With the acceptance that 1 style (or even 10 styles!) of teaching…

Students need to realize that learning is not only limited in the classroom. Lecturing and tutoring not only help the students to understand the knowledge and achieve the academic purpose, but also guide them to construct the way of thinking. I use my prior knowledge to guide the lessons and prepare, ensuing students build upon their knowledge and…

It is very important as a tutor to understand your student. Be his silent friend and connect with him. Read his mental abilities, his interest, observe his qualities and disabilities, his way of learning things. And then try to impart the teaching depending on all these factors. Each student is different and so is the method of teaching. Teaching…

In my opinion, being a person that students are comfortable with to reach out for help is one of the most important things. A tutor should be there to assist them, not add stress or pressure to them. I also think it is important for tutors to motivate the students to learn, instead of just giving answers, and in motivating them, tutors should be…

The most important thing a tutor can do is help their students to see the value and potential in themselves. Inside Toorak GardensTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Alex focused on calculating surface area and volume for a range of 3D shapes, alongside reinforcing index laws and an introduction to surds.

In Year 10, Sarah practiced applying quadratic equations to real-life problems and revised methods for solving for x in quadratics, including factorising and using the quadratic formula.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Liam tackled advanced trigonometric functions by graphing transformations of sine and cosine curves and began exploring applications of the unit circle using worked examples.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student arrived to tuition without key materials, including their calculator and textbook, which slowed progress on algebra practice.

In a senior lesson, a Year 11 student tried to solve quadratic equations in their head—"mistakes are barely detected and noticed when you go back and check"—but avoided writing out steps, making it hard to catch errors or gain partial marks.

Another student's maths book was described as disorganised during square root exercises, causing confusion when reviewing work.

Meanwhile, a primary learner appeared distracted during explanations of surface area for cylinders, missing important clarification in the moment.

Recent Achievements

One Toorak Gardens tutoring session saw a Year 10 student, Ariana, move from confusion with completing the square to confidently tackling quadratic equations on her own and achieving a top band score of 70/74 in her recent test—she now explains each step logically without prompting.

Meanwhile, a Year 8 student who used to hesitate with fraction questions has begun working through indices problems almost entirely independently, showing real initiative when faced with new topics.

In Year 5, one student has started identifying perimeters and simpler shapes in composites much more quickly than before, even checking their answers aloud as they work.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Burnside Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Marryatville High School.
