I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to motivate them to do the best they can in whatever aspect they are struggling, as with continued determination and perseverance, they can always achieve the goals they have set for themselves. I believe one of my biggest strengths as a tutor is that I have excellent communication…

I believe it’s important to empathise with students rather then being sympathetic. Sympathy comes with one feeling a sense of emotion for sometime. Whereas, when in comes to tutoring, we need to empathise with students as it’ll allow us to position ourselves in their circumstances. Therefore, will give as a vision of a reality closer to what a…

The most important thing to me is that the student feels comfortable with my teaching style and that they are motivated to learn, not feeling that the subject is too hard or too dry, but instead I prioritise adding personal interest of the students and relate it to the topic which helps to grasp better understanding towards it. My strengths are…

The most important things a tutor can do are build the student's confidence, adapt to their learning style, and make complex concepts clear and relatable. As a recent student myself, I can easily relate to students and adapt my teaching to their needs. I simplify complex concepts, use engaging methods, and make learning feel less…

In my opinion, making the student feel comfortable is key to establishing a healthy and optimistic relationship with learning. The teaching space needs to be free of judgement and should feel inclusive. A one-size-fits-all method of teaching disregards every student's unique circumstances so the tutor should make an active effort to empathise with…

Be being a tutor and mentor, I believe in the below things I do - Get to know each student's learning style and adapt your teaching accordingly. - Explain concepts in a way that's easy to grasp and encourage them to ask questions. - Be patient when they face challenges, and provide support to build their confidence. - Show how the subject…

A tutor provides a student with the platform to perform at their highest academic potential. This is achieved by ensuring a student has an adequate understanding of key concepts and the targeted material to practice those concepts in an exam environment. The important difference between a tutor and a teacher is that a student gives a student the…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is to wear students' shoes, which means to understand their strengths, weaknesses, and learning styles. Once we recognise how each student learns best, we can adapt our explanations and materials to support them more effectively. I used to struggle with some of these subjects myself, which helps me…

Empathy: Understand how the student is feeling or understood a particular concept based on their behavioural and body language cues. This is because most students do not give explicit feedback. Understanding the student's learning pace: Every student is unique and have their own pace of learning. As a tutor you need to adapt to that. I am…

I think the most important thing is to understand the student's cognitive ability and be able to relate to their world. Giving them examples using whatever they're into, for example, cartoons/video games, in order to teach a concept goes a long way. There isn't a bible when it comes to teaching, it's an evolving process, which gets better over…

I think it would be the unlimited support and confidence the tutor has for their student as well as their passion for their subject they are teaching. If the student feels like their tutor listens to them and has confidence in their potential, then in due time, the student will likely flourish and develop their abilities. A lot of the time…

Firstly, a tutor has to be able to understand the student's needs and then personalise a learning plan/ style that works for the student - one size does not fit all! Secondly, the tutor needs to guide the student not get them to parrot generic question answers. It's about building the students confidence up, through positive encouragement, and…

Many students may feel vulnerable or ashamed when being tutored as they may feel lesser than others. Therefore, it is extremely…

Provide a safe environment for them to question things. To teach students how to ask the right questions. Efficient questioning. To spark curiosity and interest, that they my also push themselves out of their own desire to learn more. And in doing all of this, will in turn build their self confidence. I think the most important things a tutor can do for a student is teach a student how to be conscientious in their work, how to learn effectively and efficiently, and problem solve for themselves. These traits are important life skills that can be gained through education/schooling that they will inevitably have to apply in their maturation into…

Guidance. It's always guidance. Every student has different expectations from a tutor and thus the most important thing might vary from student to student. For some grades wont even matter and they strive for understanding the subject thoroughly. I believe the…

I attended many tutoring facilities during my time at school hence I have learnt the most valuable things a tutor can offer to a student is the patience and a change to be able to complete the work themselves, which giving them a few hints to get them on the right track. or if they're completely stuck to give a detailed explanation of the…

A tutor should first of all help the student to build his self-confidence and self-esteem. Appreciating small efforts and hard work of the student will allow him to be more confident and continue working in that direction. This will help him not only academically but also in later stages of life where he will learn the importance of perseverance…

I think that a good tutor should be able to inspire and motivate their student to do well. They should also be able to relate with the student and understand how they learn best so that they can teach them well. They must also have the skill set and knowledge to explain difficult concepts. Inside TottenhamTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Daniel practised NAPLAN numeracy skills by interpreting dot plots and tackling worded questions involving operations with fractions.

Year 8 student Chelsea focused on using the laws of indices to simplify expressions and applied her understanding of surds through practice quizzes and textbook review.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Ava worked on solving quadratic equations by completing the square and sketched quadratic graphs using turning point form for visual reinforcement.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student often avoided writing out working in algebra and long division, saying "I can do it in my head," which led to forgotten steps and confusion when checking answers.

In Year 11, a student relied heavily on her calculator for expanding and factorising exercises, making it difficult during non-calculator tests.

Another senior student's workbook layout was inconsistent—dates missing, mixed notes and questions—which made revision stressful before exams.

A Year 5 learner sometimes left homework incomplete due to a busy week; this limited opportunities for targeted feedback on tricky topics like fractions and multiplication.

Recent Achievements

A Tottenham tutor recently noticed a big shift with one high school student, Chelsea, who used to get stuck on worded problems—she now works through them independently and even organises her solutions clearly without prompting.

In another session, Sasha, also in high school, began tackling every test question instead of skipping the ones she found confusing; she's started asking clarifying questions instead of giving up.

Meanwhile, Camilla in Year 5 managed to create her first dot plot and confidently answered related questions—a leap from needing step-by-step guidance just a few weeks ago.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Footscray West—or at your child's school (with permission), like Dinjerra Primary School.
