One of the most vital things a tutor should do is ensure that he is understood teaching-wise and that he understands his pupils perfectly. One thing that some teachers don't have is empathy for the unique condition of a student. A student's ability to learn can be affected in various ways, like by his surroundings and so on. It is significantly…

I believe that a good tutor has the the ability to help students build confidence for the classroom, and inspire them to be the best that they can be. Another thing that is important to me is not belittling the student or making them feel "stupid" for not understanding, but instead relating to them and helping them find a different way to solve…

It is to build the student's confidence, create a safe space to learn without judgment, and adapt their teaching to fit the student' needs. It's not just about helping them understand a topic - it's about helping them believe that they can. Being there and answering questions they ask at anytime whoch would be crucial. Empathy: Understand how the student is feeling or understood a particular concept based on their behavioural and body language cues. This is because most students do not give explicit feedback. Understanding the student's learning pace: Every student is unique and have their own pace of learning. As a tutor you need to adapt to that. I am…

I consider one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is build their confidence. Once this is established and the student has faith in their own abilities, the tutor is able to guide and facilitate their learning as a pose to simply instruct. The role of the tutor is to recognise what the student is capable of doing on their own…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to think the way a student thinks. The understanding level of a tutor and a student are at different levels, so it is essential for a tutor to go to the students' level and try to explain to them as to what is being taught. It is also essential for the tutor to make the class as interesting…

Listen to what the student has to say, and base their teaching strategy around their individual needs. The most important thing to keep in mind when tutoring in my opinion is to help them gain confidence & enjoyment in the subject. If a student believes they are bad at a subject, they often won't try as hard because they view it as pointless. Confirmation bias can also lead to only noticing when they make mistakes, meaning they won't recognise the…

Inside TullamarineTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Adam focused on distinguishing between prime and composite numbers and converting percentages to decimals, while also practising how to change mixed numbers into improper fractions.

In Year 8, Jasmine worked through simplifying algebraic expressions and factorisation, then solved linear equations with real examples.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Lucas tackled problems involving the area and circumference of circles as well as applying the formula for the area of a trapezium using step-by-step calculations.

Recent Challenges

Homework was left incomplete across several year levels.

In Year 7, an algebraic expressions task and a linear equation worksheet were not finished; the tutor noted, "he attempted only half of the assigned problems before moving on."

A Year 8 student working on factorisation also submitted partial work, often skipping written steps when solutions got tricky.

Messy or unstructured working made it hard to spot calculation errors in Year 6 fraction exercises—scratchings crowded margins, making review difficult.

Meanwhile, a younger learner in Year 3 multiplication tended to rely on oral answers rather than writing out full tables, which led to gaps during class revision.

Recent Achievements

One Tullamarine tutor noticed a big change in Bella (Year 4), who used to need step-by-step support with subtraction but now tackles problems with borrowing by herself.

In Year 7 maths, a student who'd been hesitant about algebra is completing textbook exercises independently on representing variables and simplifying expressions—last week they even finished most of their yearly exam corrections without prompting.

Meanwhile, a high school art student has started experimenting with digital photo manipulation for their project after initially struggling to find inspiration; this week, they produced an unexpected new look using Photoshop's pen tool and gradient map.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Gladstone Park Community Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Tullamarine Primary School.
