A tutor should have good listening skills so that they will better understand students' misconceptions and struggles. It is important to treat each student and how you go about emphasising the content to the students uniquely. A good tutor should aim to be relatable and open to share own experiences with learning and highlight that it isn't an…

A tutor is a guide who would be able to give personal learning experience to students which they might not be able to get during a school class. Being able to formulate different approaches on the go is something a tutor should be able to do in order for the students to understand at their own pace. A tutor should also be patient in order to make the student feel welcomed whenever they are in a predicament academically. Other than that, a tutor should be friendly so the students feel…

A tutor can notice the student's strength and nourish it through a structured set of activities that the student can do in class as well as independently. A tutor can also notice the areas of student's weaknesses and supply the student with a learning program that can tackle these weaknesses gradually and methodically. Additionally, a tutor is a…

Go beyond just helping them do their assignments and touch up on what they fall behind in their classes. The most important things that a tutor can do for a student, in my opinion, are motivating the students to learn on their own as well as arming them with the tools and study skills. The motivation to learn is critical, since the tutor can teach the material, but at the end of the day, it is the student who has to master it. Without such…

I think the most important thing would be to assist a student in achieving their goals but to also challenge them to reach their potential. A tutor possesses many pivotal roles in a student's journey to tertiary levels. I believe the single most crucial contribution a tutor can make is to fan the flame. If a student gives up on their own ability despite genuine interest, then their potential will be lost. A tutor has the unique capability, and responsibility, to recognise and…

Inside TurrellaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Grace practised converting decimals to percentages and vice versa, and also worked on calculating mean, mode, median, and range.

For Year 10, Thomas focused on factorising quadratic expressions (both monic and non-monic) using the PSF method and solved equations by completing the square and applying the quadratic formula.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Grace analysed T.S. Eliot's poetry for Module B, refined essay structures for English Advanced, and practised unpacking essay questions to develop stronger thesis statements.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 mathematics, one student hesitated to attempt harder algebra problems without textbook guidance—"needs more tries on more multiplication problems," a tutor noted—resulting in repeated practice of only familiar types.

For a senior student in Advanced English, feedback was often unaddressed between drafts; ideas discussed aloud were rarely incorporated into written essays, and her arguments leaned heavily on repeating class-taught terms rather than building with specific examples from texts.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner struggled to follow sentences line by line in reading tasks and skipped back-checking answers aloud, which made sequencing steps in worded math problems even more challenging during sessions.

Recent Achievements

A Turrella tutor noticed one Year 11 student who used to struggle with linking feedback to her writing now revises full essay drafts independently, making targeted changes for clarity and detail.

In Year 9 maths, a student who was hesitant with mean, mode, and median recently solved data questions without prompting and tackled converting decimals to percentages confidently.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who previously guessed at unfamiliar words has started pausing to sound them out before reading on—showing more patience and self-correction than before. Last session, she read the next chapter out loud with minimal help.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Arncliffe Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Arncliffe West Infants School.
