What do I enjoy most about tutoring? 😁
What I enjoy most is seeing a student work through something they initially found difficult and come out the other side with genuine understanding. Through six years of coaching chess to kids aged 5 to 12, I learned that the moment a concept clicks for someone is really rewarding to be part of. I got good at reading when a student was struggling and adjusting my approach to suit them, whether that meant slowing down, trying a different explanation, or making it more hands-on. I think that translates really well to maths tutoring.
My Strengths as Tutor 💪
My two biggest strengths as a tutor are communication and attention to detail. Through six years of coaching chess to kids of varying ages and abilities, I learned how to explain the same concept in different ways depending on who I was talking to. Being able to read a student and adjust how I communicate made a real difference in how quickly they progressed.
Most important things I can do for a student 🏅
I think the most important things a tutor can do are understand each student as an individual and make the experience feel approachable rather than stressful. A lot of students who need tutoring have already had negative experiences with the subject, so coming in with a one-size-fits-all approach rarely works. Some students needed more encouragement, others needed a faster pace. Once you figure that out, teaching becomes a lot easier.
