What do I enjoy most about tutoring? 😁
Having the time to really notice one person. In a classroom, one confused student can easily get lost, but in a session I can see exactly where their thinking goes wrong and fix it on the spot. I got a taste of this volunteering with 5 students, where nobody could hide. I also like that it's part teaching and part detective work. A student who says "I hate maths" is usually missing one old building block, and finding it is the best part.
My Strengths as Tutor 💪
I'm patient, and my engineering background has taught me to break a big, messy problem into small steps and find the one that's failing. I'm relaxed about mistakes but clear about the plan. Students can say "I don't get it" without feeling silly, and they also know what we're covering and what to practise before the next lesson. I keep lessons active with short quizzes, recapping the last lesson and having the student explain things back to me, and I take a short break if their focus drops. I'm also reliable, because a student can't relax with a tutor who might not show up prepared.
Most important things I can do for a student 🏅
Build confidence first. Most students who struggle aren't lacking ability, they've decided they're "bad at it". A tutor can change that with small wins early on and by making it safe to be wrong. After that, be honest and consistent. Tell the student and parent what's improving and what still needs work, and don't just say everything is going well. If a student keeps making the same algebra error, the best thing isn't to solve it for them, but to help them notice the pattern themselves.
