Set clear expectations and help students develop strong study habits that extend beyond a single subject. Having recently completed SACE (in 2024) with a raw ATAR of 99.90, my knowledge of the high school curriculum is up to date. I am aware of common troubles many students experience in a variety of high school subjects, and through personal…

I believe there are several things an english tutor can deliver to her students, the primary of which is to instill a sense of confidence and can-do attitude among them. This means my role will not only limit to a tutor but also a mentor, guiding my students on multiple aspects of their academic path. As a seasoned tutor and teacher of English,…

A tutor can encourage student so that they can boost their confident to do the things and make them understand things from their point of view so that they remember lessons for long time. The most important thing an english tutor can do for a student is to believe in them. Students already have bounds of pressure heaped on them, academic, parental, administrative, personal, etc. and sometimes all it takes is one Calculus question to bring them to their wit's end. A tutor must support their students throughout their learning journey…

Expanding on what I have written earlier, I think that one of the most important things an english tutor can do for a student is be prepared, and always willing to learn. I think this requires being a bit humble, and accepting that, even with something that may appear to be far below the tutor's learning, there may still be things that aren't…

Besides helping them understand and learn a topic, the tutor should also help the student master the topic through mastery learning. Mastery learning is a way of designing units of work so that each set of tasks focuses on a particular learning objective and students must master a task to move onto the next one. The tutor should also help the…

I believe the most powerful way an english tutor can aid a student is by giving them confidence. More than often, students can show more vulnerability in a one-on-one session than in a classroom surrounded by their peers, and so the best thing I can do is use these private sessions to impart confidence in the students by making them see ways they…

I think that an english tutor must be patient and remain composed with each student. A tutor is meant to be that person whose teaching is tailored, so it requires an individualized approach, picked up and constantly adjusted as needs change and develop. I have (as told to me by all my ever-suffering associates) a 'wild' vocabulary, and for English…

A tutor can tailor instruction to meet the specific needs, learning style, and pace of the student. Moreover, students can help students understand complex concepts by providing clear explanations, examples, and demonstrations. Additionally, an english tutor can assess the student's strengths and weaknesses in a subject and use this assessment to…

The most important things I can do for a student, is to put myself in their shoes when teaching. Often some students take longer to understand, comprehend or apply the knowledge taught. I believe that a tutor should be able to build relationships with a student where the students are provided with an environment where they are heard and observed. I think this allows tutors to strategize methods in helping students progress, learn and succeed. This must be done with patience, constant assessment of student's progress, and…

According to me the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to instil confidence and positive mindset in a student which can empower the student to take on challenges. The most important thing a tutor can do for their student is ensure that the student has gained the ability to consolidate the information taught. The student must be able to reproduce the content learned in their own words at their own time. Specifically for English, many students have wonderful, original ideas in their minds, however, they…

Inside Unley ParkTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Noah focused on long and short division as well as strategies for rounding numbers to the nearest place value, using both school homework and targeted worksheets.

In Year 8, Ella worked through algebraic expressions by collecting like terms and expanding brackets, then tackled practice questions involving probability of events with sample spaces.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Matilda prepared for her upcoming maths test by revising exponentials and also completed key sections of her biochemistry assignment, discussing concepts like electronegativity and dipoles.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student's algebra work revealed a tendency to "skip showing steps in working," making it difficult to spot and fix sign errors; as noted, "more care needs to be taken in formatting her working out."

Meanwhile, in Year 11 Biology, an assignment draft was only worked on during lessons—independent progress at home lagged behind, impacting readiness for deadlines.

For a primary student, over-reliance on calculators emerged when practicing times tables and rounding, which slowed recall of basic facts.

In one session, a lack of confidence meant questions weren't asked even when confusion arose about worded problems.

Recent Achievements

One Unley Park tutor recently saw a big shift with a Year 11 student who, after struggling to work through practice tests alone, started completing most homework independently and only needed help with the last two questions.

In another session, a Year 8 student who previously waited for every prompt now tries solving algebra problems solo—she explained her process out loud and pinpointed mistakes herself when shown.

Meanwhile, in primary years, a younger student went from needing reminders to forming sentences using new words each week without any prompting. At the end of one lesson, she read her sentences aloud on her own initiative.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Unley Civic Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Walford Anglican School for Girls.
